Imagine this: an artist creates a work and at the click of a button, they export the one and only copy directly to the blockchain. We’re not talking about uploading to decentralized storage like IPFS (where persistence is not guaranteed). We mean, writing the entire piece’s data, in a contract, on the chain. Forever.

Genesis Platform: Arpeggi Studio

The mission of Arpeggi Labs is to bridge the gap between artists and the NFT world through creative platforms that are easy to use and fully integrated into the chain. We’re a collective of software developers, career artists, and blockchain technologists who believe creatives should have direct access to the power of the blockchain.

Our genesis platform is Arpeggi Studio, an in-browser digital audio workstation (DAW) where users compose and mint their own songs directly to the chain. When a user mints their composition, an immutable copy is stored in-contract and owned by its creator. No third party storage. No middleman.

Most NFTs are static and claim utility only through roadmaps and lofty promises. We hope that the utility of the first on-chain music creation platform speaks for itself.

Arpeggi Studio Pass

We want NFT collectors and creators alike to participate in the Arpeggi ecosystem, so we’re releasing the Arpeggi Studio Pass to distribute mint access in Arpeggi Studio Alpha.

The Arpeggi Studio Pass acts as your ticket to mint a fully on-chain song in Arpeggi Studio. Studio Pass holders simply click the “Mint” button, enter a Track Title and Artist Name, and receive an ‘Arpeggi Single’ NFT of their song directly to their wallet. The Studio Pass is consumed on mint.

We will withhold 64 passes from mint as part of the Arpeggi Creators Reserve. These passes will be distributed in a number of ways to career artists and the community to encourage high-quality creation on our platform.

The Value In On-Chain Creation

In the last few months, the community has recognized that the permanence and persistence of the NFT medium is what drives its core value. But, some NFTs are more permanent and persistent than others.

Fully on-chain art collections have become the gold standard for today’s NFTs. Larva Labs’ Autoglyphs currently has a floor price of 399 ETH on OpenSea, with a most recent sale of 870 ETH.

Autoglyphs was the first fully on-chain generative art collection.

Arpeggi Studio is the first fully on-chain creative music platform.

A New Model: The Creative Community

One of the most powerful aspects of the NFT world is its ability to create community. By designing our platform around art creation instead of art generation, we hope to usher in a new era of the Creative Community.

Currently, there exists a disconnect between holders, their NFT’s and the artists behind them. Full creative control of the on-chain space rests in the hands of the few artists capable of writing generative scripts.

In contrast, the unique creative model of Arpeggi Studio opens the door to an immense number of artists who have been excluded from on-chain creation.

To help build this new community we have three key initiatives:

• Empower holders to become creators, with help from our programmatic composition generator.
• Empower creators to become holders through the Arpeggi Creative Reserve
• Inspire collaboration between holders, creators and the Arpeggi Team through community giveaways, competitions, and feedback.

The First Of Its Kind?

Blockchain storage is expensive.

To store a 500x500 jpeg directly in a contract would cost you approximately $5000 dollars in gas fees alone. The limitations of on-chain storage have led to the rise of a new medium, Generative Art, in which developers use small scripts and random seeds to programmatically generate on-chain art.

It’s incredible to see the range of collections that have come from this movement, but non-generative artists are completely barred from contributing to this new space. To break down this barrier, we needed to develop an inexpensive method for artists to write their custom work to the chain without sacrificing its creative quality.

Fortunately, our technical lead has been working on digital-music representation for over six years. We’ve designed a hyper-efficient song representation inspired by sheet music, that allows artists to represent the complexity of a full song without sacrificing quality.

The composition serial is fed into our on-chain player script to render the song audio in your browser. Just press play and enjoy.

Looking Forward For Arpeggi Labs

Our initial Genesis Studio Pass demonstrates the power and possibilities of an on-chain creative platform, but it’s just the beginning for Arpeggi Labs.

Our future collections will implement the first ever artist royalty system for on-chain music. Smart contracts are powerful tools for rewarding artists, and through our platform, more people than ever will be able to profit from their on-chain creations. We’re excited to be at the forefront of decentralizing and democratizing wealth in the music industry.
