Announcing Our Investment in Boss Beauties

Offline Ventures is proud to announce our investment in Boss Beauties.

Boss Beauties is a leading consumer brand in the women’s NFT space and one of the largest communities dedicated to mentorship and career opportunities for women and girls. A collection of 10,000 digital portraits featuring diverse women in leadership and innovation, Boss Beauties represents hope for a more equitable future that we are excited to cheer on.

Even amid today’s boom in crypto activity, there are very few women’s NFT projects that have broken into the mainstream. Only 5% of NFT artist accounts are women-run, indicative of a broader economic sidelining of women in the creative industries — and a traditional undervaluation of women’s art and ideas.

We are confident that Boss Beauties will prompt a long-awaited shift toward more woman-identifying NFT creators, curators and collectors. Boss Beauties is well on the way to becoming part of the cultural zeitgeist, like BAYC and CryptoPunks., as indicated by it being the first NFT collection featured in the New York Stock Exchange — and the first to ink exclusive partnerships with Barbie manufacturer Mattel and entertainment behemoth Marvel. Both entities – international cultural icons – plan to create a multiverse of powerful woman characters. In addition, Coinbase featured Boss Beauties alongside BAYC at its initial launch, further indication that Boss Beauties is able to rival the world’s most valuable and influential NFT projects.**

Why are we bullish on NFTs?

Overall, we see NFTs as the new membership clubs, loyalty programs, storytelling brands — and even e-commerce. What we are most excited about, however, is NFTs’ potential to create highly engaged communities at a time of great need for meaningful connection.

The NFT-based communities who will endure beyond the immediate spending frenzy, buzz-worthy NFT imagery and price appreciation as a proxy for exclusivity, are groups united by shared values, lived experiences and an intrinsic need for unique spaces dedicated to belonging. Women-led NFT communities like Boss Beauties are paving the way for women’s on-ramp into crypto, girls’ education and next-generation STEM leaders and innovators.

Offline’s Belief in Web3 for the Women’s Economy

Web3 is heralded as a brand-new era of the internet, projected to reach $10 trillion in the next five years. Yet within this potential, women are missing out. Currently, 81% of participants are male while only 6% of women in the US own crypto. Accordingly, the bulk of all venture capital dollars is going to male founders.

This glaring gender gap led me to found BFF and recruiting my co-founder Jaime Schmidt to launch what we hope will be the internet’s largest decentralized brand created for women and nonbinary people. Together, we have onboarded more than 100 fearless role models and leaders across industries to launch an open-access community that helps women and non-binary people get educated, connected and rewarded in web3.

Furthering the momentum, Randi Zuckerberg, an Offline Ventures venture partner, recently co-founded HUG, a community and accelerator for up-and-coming female creators and collectors in web3.

Our belief in Web3 as a fairer and more transparent earning method for women has also led us to hold NFTs from projects such as World of Women. We have investedin female-focused collaboratives such as Unicorn DAO, a collecting fund dedicated to investing in NFT projects by female, nonbinary and LGBTQIA+ artists with the goal of supporting their art and equitably redistributing wealth. Unicorn DAO is composed of more than 30 artist curators, in addition to activists —a who’s who of web3 funds and collectors, jointly helmed by former Pussy Riot leader Nadya Tolokonnikova and Rebecca Lamis of Quantum Art.

One of the key differentiation points we see across the bulk of the most successful women’s NFT brands is a bold mission with a giveback clause. Boss Beauties uses proceeds from their NFTs to help mentor young women and girls. The notable collection Women Rise uses proceeds to help fund global organizations championing  girls’ education. BFF will use proceeds to help kickstart more female entrepreneurs’ businesses. HUG uses proceeds to accelerate female creators within web3.

If you believe that web3 is in fact a new technology layer of the internet, and that one day we will see gender parity among its users, then you might understand why we at Offline believe that female founders are imperative to building the web’s next-gen products, brands and services geared towards those users. Cumulatively, we will see hundreds of millions of new female and nonbinary users enter this space in the next 10 years, especially as the technology becomes safer and easier to navigate. There is no doubt about it: this is a multi-trillion dollar market opportunity.

For an industry where only 4% of the founders are women, we have got an eye on the bulk of them. Below is a market landscape (Miro link to see it up close) of some companies we are watching — and that we think you should be, too. What are we missing? Tweet me to make more suggestions.

At Offline Ventures, we are immensely proud that our friends over at Boss Beauties, BFF, HUG, World of Women, Unicorn DAO and so many other women-led communities have already begun paving the way for countless others.

We are thrilled to be at the forefront of the rising web3 project tides towards a joint future that is not just women-friendly, but women-centric.
