My name is Cam Murdoch. I’m a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, audio engineer, visual artist, and entrepreneur.
In Web 2.0 I was not allowed to be all of those things even though I developed the skills out of necessity and lack of community. In late 2021, I ventured into Web 3.0 and discovered space to simply be all that I am. Here embrace the hyphens.
FUTURE SURF LABS is the creative and curatorial effort that I began as a means of compiling the various things that I wanted to do in the world under one entity that represented an extension of my personal philosophies and hopefully inspired those who are similar or see at least a little bit of themselves in what I am making.
The phrase “future surf” refers to the musical genre, visual aesthetic, and general frame of mind that I felt best described the way that I move through the world.
Musically speaking, “future surf” was inspired by an affinity for coastal vibes and futurism. Particularly, learning about Fela Kuti’s journey to develop a specific sound that embodied his culture and connected across his influences; and how that sparked a movement that persists to this day was a great inspiration to me. Studying how artistic movements in other parts of the world would spring up with similar vibes and ethos, yet the creators never having crossed paths, was fascinating.
From Reggaeton being an answer to Afrobeat, to newer movements such as Alte Cruise building on top of what Fela Kuti created while also taking on pieces from American Hip-Hop and R&B music made observe the ocean as a portal that connected rather than separating us.
“Future Surf” was then born to explore these connections and bring forth from my imagination what the next layer could look, feel, and sound like; where could that take us? My answer, a mystical place called Surf Noir (more on that another time).
I’m inviting everyone to take this journey with me and ride these waves into a future of expressive freedom, communal support, cultural exchange, and appreciation for each others differences.
FUTURE SURF LABS will begin with a two projects.
