I am Charm, mother of Malcolm Rahim & Mecca Selah, transformative artist, changemaker, culture keeper, and multi founder, born in St. Louis, Mo. and based in New Orleans, LA. I have served New Orleans families since 2007 in public schools, arts camps, guerilla gardens, wellness workshops, secure facilities, and more.
As an independent vocalist and songwriter, I first gained recognition as the lead singer of the electric soul rock band The Honorable South. I’ve collaborated with Galactic, Spirit McIntyre, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mononeon, and synched with the NFL, Bose Audio, ESPN, and more. My music is genre defying and my dynamic performances are infused with ancestral memory, spiritual awareness, and deep feminine strength, which is also evident in my bold visual creations meditating on pathways to liberation. In 2015, I released and toured a critically acclaimed first solo EP, The Road Within, followed by several releases with local indie partner Sinking City Records, including my most recent 2021 album, She is the Future.
A lifelong student & teacher, a fulfilling career in educational leadership, and creative entrepreneur since 2008; following the pandemic, I was certain that it was time for a shift. I was ready for personal development and to redefine my relationship with labor. The grueling work weeks, emotional weight, and the limiting beliefs that told me mothers can’t dream became too much to bear. An indie artist to the bone, I was calling in more return value for my work. After being on the founding teams of 3 schools, In 2021, like many career-ing adults I decided to resign, reset, and bet on myself, my talent, gifts, and experience.
I was ready to welcome ease, comfort, and overall restoration into my life. Using the same tools I learned in graduate school to support others, I now turned that love back into myself and my most intimate family relationships. I was awarded an arts fellowship on the merit of my social practice and leaned into my creativity, sovereignty, and gratitude full time.
In the winter of 2022, I entered web3 a curious multidisciplinary artist, ready to learn, and willing to share. I was introduced to the space by a visual artist, educator, and co-founder of People for Public Art: Monica Rose Kelly. At ETHDENVER I realized the potential for transformative tech right away. Seeing women like LATASHÁ and SassyBlack let me know this was a space I could show up whole, unapologetic, and just as motivated as I’ve ever been to change the world with love that transcends & art that transforms.
I started minting music videos that represented my perspective on society but also served to contribute to funding the grassroots organizations that I see working on solutions to domestic abuse, mass incarceration, prison reform, and more.
I believe in music NFTS for social impact. I believe music NFTS can revolutionize philanthropy. I believe blockchain tech can out pace bipartisan policymakers and painfully stagnant funding models. I believe decentralized mutual aid is the way forward. I believe the world of web3 is much more than the negative media takes and a few bad characters making headlines. Investment and artist support are two underpinnings of NFT culture, why not make global community investment a pillar of our new creator economy?
My dream is to build a community mint-site that not only amplifies ground breaking high quality music but aids just causes, one NFT collection at a time. In a now future world 23’ we align artists with collectors & grassroots communities that share similar concerns, and together we create impact. Make it easy and fun to do what artists and music lovers do best! Make good music and make life better.
