Decentralized Veillance & Regulation in Web3

In 2017, D’Angelo Russell attempted to prank his teammate Nick Young by recording him when he was talking about cheating on his fiancee. Naturally the video leaked; Iggy Azalea left Young and Russell’s teammates started to shun him. Russell was not an authority in the incident, he was a participant. Despite his lack of ability to enforce what might be considered “justice” in this scenario, his veillance provided information that led to consequences. Azalea used the information that Russell created to enforce her sense of justice.

NFTs are non-fungible tokens. There are two important pieces to that term:

I studied Science and Technology Studies in university. It’s a strange field that explores the history and philosophy of knowledge and technology. Professors in the science and technology field are obsessed with the history of the bicycle and combining concepts that have no reason to exist together. There’s a lot of discussion of pseudoscience in STS and on how using realities or frameworks from one discipline to understand another can be dangerous and have no value. Candidly, it’s a field full of pseudoscience, contradictions, and defining obvious concepts — I wouldn't have wanted to study anything else. A background in STS is helpful when dealing with the interdisciplinary aspects of cryptographic technologies, macro & micro economic markets, and endless psyops.

Over the past year, the term “meta” has lost all that defines it. The metaverse discourse has been pure drivel and to most, metaverse refers to a VR world where people walk around and look at NFTs. Candidly, it’s fucking stupid. Discussion of the metaverse has been sorely lacking nuance and our definition and understanding of meta is unfairly appropriated by Facebook and the attention that we give to Zuckerberg’s definition of the metaverse.

In 2021 we saw NFTs come into the public consciousness, we saw developers earn their wings, and then we learned that the underlying contracts sucked.
