Generative non rivalrous forking for good

TLDR

Not always adversarial, not always a revolution. Forking could be for new DAO factions or a remix on purpose, a rebrand, a new llc or even to go anon.

A fork could also be to fork out a bad actor, or deadlocking majority.

Problem

As the DAO ecosystem matures and there are many DAOs that have been around for several years now, some of the members are talking about Forks. Some times tese DAOs have spent their initial energy, or had some drama that has deadlocked the treasury, and many times that treasury is a non-trivial amount. Forks take a lot of coordination though. How do we find a group of intraDAO members that have similar alignment and then remove our fair share of  the treasury to be managed with these like minded people? Hopefully injecting new purpose and energy into the group. The process and coordination effort is great, and sometimes there are trust assumptions that people compromise to make the process more convenient.

Framing:

• Members should easily be able to state their ambitions to fork

• Other members should have enough sovereignty to easily commit their fair share from one DAO to another

• Members should keep custody over funds and not have to trust a counterparty or intermediary.

• A single member should be able to take action to state purpose and trustlessly build momentum

Assumptions and Questions

• Is there more to a fork than just a treasury fork?

• Are other elements of the DAO forked as well? charters, manifestos, handbooks, branding.

• What action can a single member stating a new purpose enough to create momentum

• A fork could be continuos or does it have to happen in one event.

• Is this actually just another version of a vampire attack?

• Ragequit with alternate receiver could be used to streamline the process

Example

A DAO has been around for three years, the initial team had great passion and purpose and did many cool things in the early days. Over time, as new members have joined the purpose has been diluted. Two main factions have arisen, one that thinks the original purpose is too shallow and that the social aspects of the DAO should be at the forefront. And the other that thinks that the original purpose was good and just needs some refreshing takes, and furthermore the original purpose was watered down with social overhead and operational tasks involved with that. On top of this, larger members have joined together to form a shadow majority where only their proposals pass and any others are deadlocked or shot down in excessive procedural overhead.

A minority group decides they want to fork off. They want to continue with the same brand but have a new distinct purpose from the trunk. A team co-creates a statement of purpose, and loose roadmap, inherits the band and other supporting resources, then sets up a new DAO. Members ragequit the trunk and stake into the new branch treasury.

Logo remixing maybe a good way to continue to propagate a community brand but have distinct identity 

for a real world example, say a MetaCartel branch remixed the logo to something even more offensive. like the chili man is holding a nazi burrito or something, the trunk could decide not to upstream merge that. But maybe another branch changes the logo to a red gangster unicorn farting rainbows, the trunk might think that actually is a good remix and merge it in, all other branches could then decide to do the same.
