How do I start to explain the exiting new opportunities of Web3 to my 79 year old mother? My kids? My friends? My clients…. my industry of visual practitioners???
I am an artistic engineer. For that reason the “ownership” dialogue that is being held at the moment in DISCORD-like platforms interests me a lot for several reasons.
- As an engineer I am always looking for ways to make the world a better place. I believe this new digital arena is the playground for shaping future structures.
- As an Artist, I am feeling my way through the many layers of fluff and foolish attempts of making money, to get to the essence of a new way of getting your work out there.
- As an experience designer I see a lot of opportunity to bring the energy that is put into this new digital direction and balance it out with analogue touchpoints.
In order for my own grip to form (about what concepts and activities might be relevant for me), I have travelled along different paths offered by different people who all have unique interests & motivations to move around in this space.
My Genesis Experience, Talking about & exploring Web3, started with Joshua Nuttall. We were both intrinsically motivated to create or rather curate a form of grip on Web3 and its pitfalls, opportunities and potential. Id had to be some sort of experience that could connect a person who genuinely wants to know more about the WEB3 world to the most important concepts and principles that are starting to govern this volatile space (march 2022). There is a real need there because a lot of people do not have or can make the time to connect to what Web3 can do for them.
There is a lot of stuff already out there. If you navigate to my earlier post on WEB1,2,3 you will find some real treasures below, that will get you started with the basics of Web3.
After finding and consuming the basics, which took me about 50 hours worth of wondering, I pivoted my efforts to creating a framework that would allow me to share my findings in a more interactive way. Giving the ones who are looking for the door a more curated key experience of finding the basics by directly applying web3 principles and learn from doing. Certain paths let you get to know the specific building blocks that are relevant your own personal need-set. What do you need to know, see, listen to and understand when you are introduced to the potential of a new way of building, sharing, connecting, owning, paying, contributing and yes…living.
From personal experience I have been confronted with a whole lot of jargon and deep knowledge language, BEFORE I started to understand the basic of this world that some call CRYPTO, others the future of the INTERNET of maybe just Web3.
Why WEB3? It means just what it says…it is the 3rd iteration since the public use of the internet in the beginning of the 90’s (yes… last century…;).
So why would YOU need to know more about what is happening with the internet? Isn’t everything just moving ahead on its own? Are we not getting better connections with 5G and more friends to play with on all of our socials? I would say YES…the internet is growing and getting to be an ever increasing force in our lives.
The stories of potential are not all for me… but the ones that are promise a whole lot. When I invested my time in getting to know the new features of an already unimaginable connected world of networks and communities, i arrived at the Question Neo asked when he was chatting with Trinity on the dark web…”what is the Matrix?” … We ask it a little different: “What is Web3 and what does it mean for me?”
Now the main question is uncovered… “WHERE DO I START?
So this is where a map can help people to understand and navigate the moving target of CRYPTO. Getting to the core of how YOU can benefit from all of its advantages and how much time YOU need to invest to be able to leverage those advantages.
My current challenge is set… how to create this map and make it FUN, experiential and relevant.
