DeScientists Unite!

DeSci is the most rapidly expanding and intellectually collaborative space in Web3 and coordination and communication are two key areas that can change the trajectory of our progress.

🛎 The Problem

Given the nature of research and Web3, DeSci communities are constantly talking, sharing, hosting events and contributing to each other’s projects. It is a wonderful thing to behold and something that we all want to bolster as much as possible. There are multiple mediums that we all love to utilise such as Twitter Spaces, Discord Events, Twitch Streams and more.

Currently there is no uniform solution for events coordination in the DeSci space. An interim solution, kindly maintained by Ariella from Web3WomenInScience, is a public Google Calendar that DeSci projects can list events on for all interested parties to see and attend.

Whilst this is an easy solution to implement it lacks the power of Web3, as Google remains the ruler of the Web2 kingdom. Despite its strengths and omnipresence, Google is still a centralised entity with no current interoperability with Web3 solutions such as wallets, tokens or on-chain verification.

✅ A Solution

At DeSciWorld we propose: an ecosystem-wide Web3 integration with Backdrop.

“Backdrop is a network that connects tokenized communities. By aggregating key information across communities in Web3 — starting with content, events, and governance — contributors and interested community members can stay up to date and participate with communities they care about all in one place.

By being Web3 native, Backdrop leverages the open graph of information facilitated by blockchains to automate work that admins would otherwise have to do, and enable token gated features among other community benefits.”

Backdrop are building a platform to make community connection and collaboration incredibly easy. For us at DeSciWorld, this is an essential component to achieving our goal of opening up the World of DeSci and empowering would-be DeScientists to access information, resources and collaboration opportunities. Importantly, the feature we are exploring here are the Events.

🆕 Web3 Power

Events can be logged into their simple platform flow (showcased here) with a variety of powerful Web3 tools, including:

  • Token-Gated event visibility
  • Token-Gated event attendance
  • Automatic notifications and updates based on your connected wallet (i.e. if someone holds your project’s token, they will automatically be updated about your events)
  • Co-Hosting with other listed DAOs/Projects*****
  • Ability to follow individuals as speakers*****
  • Direct links to the DAO/Project pages through the events system
  • View Web3 profiles of RSVP’d members
  • Option to issue NFTs to speakers and/or attendees**

*anyone following these would also receive notifications of the event.
**coming soon.

Here’s the real kicker: they will soon have an API that allows simple integration of the Events into your own platform / UX.

A dedicated Web3 platform such as Backdrop is lightweight, thus can be upgraded nimbly, and accessible, thus can receive direct feedback and suggestions from the community. We believe that it would be best to reach a group consensus on a solution to events coordination as early as possible, to improve DeSci collaboration, event attendance and spread awareness (including displaying the power of Web3!).

🌍 DeSciWorld’s Intention

DeSciWorld had planned an aggregated DeSci events calendar for our Dashboard platform; we were considering building it ourselves but were thankfully introduced to the team at Backdrop. Rather than do this ourselves we believe that it is both more effective and true to the spirit of collaboration within Web3 to try wholesale community adoption of this platform. This article is essentially a Call to Action for the DeSci ecosystem to adopt this as a system for the future.

As we onboard new projects into our aggregated information Dashboard, we will ask them to create a Backdrop profile for their project and log upcoming events through there. This would make it very simple for DeSciWorld’s burgeoning community to stay up to date with all that DeSci has to offer.

Our mission is to help DeSci projects to reach a wider audience than they could themselves alone, by providing a place for newbies and experienced professionals alike to onboard into DeSci. This aggregated calendar feature is an essential part of our service and we’re more than happy to endorse the wonderful team at Backdrop.
