Postcapitalism: An Uncertain Horizon Towards a New Economic and Social System
November 7th, 2023

Today’s world is changing fast, with new economic and social challenges popping up all the time. These changes have sparked interest in an idea called postcapitalism. This idea suggests a different system from capitalism, but what it exactly means and how it would work is still up for intense discussion and debate.

First, let’s talk about what capitalism is. Simply put, capitalism is an economic system where individuals or businesses own and control the production means used to make and sell goods and services. The essential values underpinning capitalism are grounded in respect: respect for individual autonomy, which manifests in the freedom of choice and enterprise; and respect for private property, which is considered a respect for the labor and time of individuals. Success is determined by one’s ability to satisfy other people’s needs.

Some people believe that our society will naturally move past capitalism as it starts to get obsolete. They think that new technology, robots, and global connections could lead to big changes in how we make and share things, creating a different system. On the other hand, some people are not so sure that this will happen on its own and say we need to do more to make a big change happen.

People are throwing around different ideas about what could replace capitalism, like socialism or degrowth. But even with these ideas, there’s a lot of debate about how a postcapitalist society would actually work. Ideas range from getting rid of private property, money and trade, to creating a mix of shared ownership and market rules.

Despite these ideas, there’s a lot of criticism that postcapitalism is too vague and not well-defined, more of a dream than a plan. This criticism also applies to other ideas like a Resource-Based Economy, which is all about using resources smartly and sustainably, but doesn’t have a clear blueprint or real-world examples to show how it would work.

Even the Natural Economic Order, another idea proposed as a new system, faces the same issue: it’s an interesting concept but without clear details on how to make it real.

As the discussion goes on, it’s clear that there’s no agreement on how postcapitalism would work in practice. Supporters of socialism and degrowth argue that these could be the next steps after capitalism. Yet, others are not convinced we’ve found the right answer yet.

One key discussion point centers on whether attributes such as rent, trade, interest, usury, and competition are intrinsic to capitalism or stem from human behavior. Some argue that attributing societal ills solely to capitalism is an oversimplification, and the real solution necessitates a shift in human behavior, independent of the economic and social system in place.

The conversation about postcapitalism digs into big questions about what our economic and social setup should be like. Is there a solid alternative to capitalism out there? What exactly would a postcapitalist system look like? Do we need to change the system, or is it more about changing ourselves?

Even though there’s no clear agreement, the conversation about postcapitalism is very important. It’s all about finding new ways to tackle the big economic and social issues we face and build a future that’s good for everyone.
