The dynamic and living interplay between humanity and nature has been a subject of compelling interest throughout our history on Planet Earth, in this current time of transition, the DSAFE community invites us to reflect on it.
During major human transitions, especially at the junctures of major transformations in our lifestyle such as the Neolithic Revolution, when some 12k years ago we transitioned from a wandering existence to a settled way of life, inducing far-reaching alterations in societal structure and production methodologies.
This monumental era of transformation marked a departure from our nomadic, gathering-based lifestyle and ushered in a new era of intervention and resource exploitation, often driven by profit motives. Primal health and birth expert, Michel Odent, suggests that this shift towards a more exploitative interaction with nature originated around this period. Thus, the pertinent question arises — how can we rekindle a reciprocally beneficial relationship with nature? Might recognizing ourselves as an integral component of nature be the first step?
In our quest for answers, contemplation can serve as a valuable tool at least to ask new questions. Nature thrives on symbiotic relationships, dynamic equilibrium, and ceaseless interaction. It is characterized by cycles, intelligence, and interconnectedness. Through introspective observation of our bodies and environment, we might uncover profound insights to forge a more harmonious relationship with nature.
To engender novel perspectives, we need to challenge the conventional mindset that perpetuates exploitation. Incorporating diverse and collective input that is attuned to our present-day needs can facilitate our exploration of innovative ways to engage with nature and our own selves. Repetition of established patterns will merely replicate the status quo.
The act of “thinking about our thinking” holds tremendous potential as a catalyst for personal and social introspection. It empowers us to question our ingrained thought processes and contest notions of disconnection and cognitive superiority over emotions.
The acknowledgment of our intertwined past and the fallacy of our perceived separation from the rest of beings is imperative. We have all navigated the turbulent waters of complex emotions. As part of nature, we are in a perpetual state of evolution and possess the ability to consciously align our minds with our bodies to enact meaningful change.
From the Neolithic age to the present day, our interaction with nature has undergone radical transformations. Despite the illusory veil of separation, we possess the ability to harness our conscious minds to cultivate new, harmonious means of engaging with nature. The keys to a sustainable future lie in contemplation, collective endeavor, and the willingness to embrace innovation.
