Community Updates Q2 2023

Onboarding students, NFT workshops for artists, community meetups, running a CLR round for public goods in Honduras, and setting up new educational and strategic partnerships to set the foundations for Honduras to bring forth crucial players in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Here is the round-up for the II Quarter: April - June 2023:

Meetups

All things Blockchain, Crypto & Smart Contracts - April 27th

We held a 101 for university students and faculty at the Engineering Students in the National University of Honduras (UNAH), Tegucigalpa Campus. Attendees came from different careers and were interested in learning about varied blockchain-related topics. The event was rounded up by five community members who supported and encouraged the students.

Conociendo Layer 2 de Ethereum - April 28th

The Ethereum San Pedro Sula community organized a meetup to discuss the world of L2s in Ethereum. They had goodies like POAP, swag, drinks, and free food.

Community Talks & Coffee - May 20th

This was a different get-together, more chill but super interesting networking sesh focused on discussing the community work ahead. It was also a great chance to meet newcomers who have been dabbling with blockchain but were looking for a local network to connect with and learn more about Ethereum.

Conociendo sobre Zero Knowledge - June 19th

In collaboration with the Maths Department at the National University of Honduras, a study group was created to talk and learn about Zero Knowledge Encryption. The group’s first in-person get-together was hosted as a meetup in collaboration with Scroll and Ethereum Tegucigalpa. Dr. Destephen, a Math Professor, gave a non-planned dissertation on ZK, and it was terrific to see students interested in the topic.

Public Goods Honduras Round - June 28th

We had two simultaneous meetups in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, where we presented the second CLR round of funding in Honduras: Public Goods 2023. We went over the application process, project eligibility, and voting. We heard the project proposals from the local Ethereum communities, long-time members, and some newcomers. It's going to be an exciting round!

Workshops

We partnered with Moonbirds, the Museo para la Identidad Nacional (MIN), and the Universidad de San Pedro Sula (USAP), intending to onboard artists and design students into web3 and NFTs by providing a complete learning experience through a series of interactive workshops.

Aprendiendo de NFTs desde Cero - Tegucigalpa

In the starter workshop, we focused on teaching basic concepts to the artists about Ethereum, Wallets, and NFTs. We closed with an interactive session where we taught artists how to create their wallets using Metamask.

Aprendiendo de NFTs desde Cero - San Pedro Sula

This workshop was similar to the one in Tegucigalpa, with the difference that it was focused on design Students. We had a couple of artists from San Pedro Sula City.

Aprendiendo de NFTs desde Cero - Tegucigalpa

The goal of this workshop was to polish the web3 skills of the artists, now that they had a wallet, we focused on how to mint an NFT, and types of marketplaces, and even had a live art creation session.

Collaborations

All the activities we have listed have been possible precisely because of the Ethereum Honduras community, and partners that allow us to tap new spaces, reach new audiences, and show the potential of Ethereum. So here's a recap of these key partnerships:

Crypto Experience 101 Onboarding Workshop with Zapper

This event was organized with Zapper en Español and the Universidad Tecnológica Centroamericana (UNITEC). Our goal was to provide a practical onboarding activity for students to learn the basics of Ethereum, DeFi, and NFTs.

The event was carried out in 4 stages:

  1. Create your wallet using Metamask and get an overview of its potential for people to access the Ethereum blockchain.

  2. Participants got $10 of ETH on Optimism Network in their new wallets from the Zapper en Español team.

  3. The students then learned how to mint NFTs and use zapper for swapping, and bridging. They also explored ways to use this technology on web3 with NFTs, DAOs, DeFi, etc.

  4. Participants ended by getting some pizza and a chance to hear about the Ethereum Honduras community, upcoming events and claim a POAP.

We had the participation of 130+ students, faculty, and staff of UNITEC Tegucigalpa, the event was a success due to the collaboration between the volunteers from Zapper and the Ethereum Tegucigalpa communities.

Bringing Solidity Education to Honduras - ETH Kipu & Education Partners

Education has been one of the main focuses of ETH Kipu since its inception. They have started working to launch solidity workshops and courses in Latin American countries and Honduras is not an exception.

Two outstanding community members of Ethereum Honduras came forth in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro to become facilitators. We have been coordinating with ETH Kipu and local Universities to launch solidity courses in two cities! We already had a first meetup to advertise the course in San Pedro and more news to come in the next quarter!

Ethereum Starter Pack Clase 5 - NFT 101 by ETH Kipu

The Ethereum Starter Pack is a series of classes created by ETH Kipu where participants learn about the world of Ethereum from Scratch. We supported the fifth class with an introductory session about NFTs.

Leaders of Entrepreneurship & Innovation in Honduras by Tec4DevHN

Ethereum Honduras participated in the first edition of Leaders of Entrepreneurship & Innovation in Honduras organized by Tec4DevHN in San Pedro Sula. Contributing to the new technologies panel, we discussed the opportunities the ecosystem provides particularly for entrepreneurs. Afterward, there was a good networking space for organizations and individuals to connect to Ethereum Honduras.

Curso para programar en Ethereum 101 with UPN

In February, we approached the Universidad Nacional PedagĂłgica de Honduras (UPN) and proposed a pilot course on introductory programming course on Ethereum, for students of their Computer Science program. The course was done online as a 20-hour intensive program taught in 5 sessions, officially ending on the 22nd of April.

Other Community Activities

CLR Round

We did a lot of testing, bug squashing, launched project applications, and prepared the documentation for the CLR round we are launching. We are only missing the voting period which will start in the first weeks of Q3. We also added support to Spanish to the CLR Fund website. The ESP sponsors the round and has a matching pool of 10,000 USD in DAI.

Twitter Spaces

Honduras CLR Public Goods Launch

In this space we explained what CLR was, the ethos of quadratic funding, and some basic concepts, we also talked about the Honduras CLR Round and what was needed for projects to apply. We had 43 participants live and 20 replays.

Road to ETH Latam con Francis Sanchinelli

Juan from ETH Tegucigalpa and Francis from ETH Guatemala had an exciting conversation about the origins of ETH Guatemala and the possibilities of collaboration in the region. 37 tuned in.

ZK Randomness Ceremonies

The Ethereum San Pedro Sula community has created a clever activity to teach and experiment with ZK Technology Primitives.

Each participant pays an entrance fee and contributes a unique word or phrase during this ceremony. These contributions are essential for generating the random number. Once the first 'commit' of the fee and work is done, we proceed to the 'reveal', where all the text strings provided by the participants are used to create the random number that will determine the winner of the accumulated pot and another fortunate winner of the NFT.

It's an interactive and collaborative experience that merges traditional art with cutting-edge blockchain technology and NFTs. The 'zkRandomness Ceremony' has become an unmissable event for anyone eager to explore new artistic frontiers and delve into the thrilling world of on-chain random number generation.

What’s coming

We are prioritizing onboarding future artists, developers, builders, and users. Expect from us in this Q3:

  • Partnerships with Honduran Universities.

  • Developer Bootcamps.

  • Results of the Honduras CLR Round.

  • Second Edition of NFT Future of Art - Exhibition and Conferences.

  • Soon™ to be announced event (We need to secure the venue first).

Thanks again to all our partners that open their doors to us and the EF Ecosystem Support Program for their trust. You can help us reach out to more people by sharing this post. If you want to contact us feel free to send us a message on Twitter @EthereumHN.
