Hacking to the Beat: Exploring the Web3 Movement with ETHSamba Hack 23

Samba Parallel Society

First and foremost, we are thrilled to share the tremendous success of the inaugural ETHSamba Hackathon 23. Over the course of three days, we planted the flag of our infinite garden's enclave atop of Rio de Janeiro and beheld the infinite potential that awaits us.

It was impossible not to be filled with excitement as we witnessed the diversity of individuals who came together, form teams and set mission, and met target outcomes.

In the small yet vibrant Samba Nation, 258 talented "Bambas” created a total of 35 projects for the Web3 movement. These projects spanned a wide range of applications, including education, public good and impact, composing with DeFi, NFT, and Metaverse. Alongside the Samba Nation, we were also fortunate to have over 245 enthusiastic attending the 1-day conference, including speakers, mentors, volunteers, and those simply curious about the future of the web.

The sponsors of the event distributed a total of $16mil in prizes to encourage the development of solutions using blockchain technology. The ETHSamba Hack was only possible thanks to the support of our amazing partners and supporters like ETHKipu, Fuel Labs, Celo, Chainlink, Metamask, Lens, Metacartel, Aurora, Scroll, Impact+, Desci World, Play4Change, GMEvents, Mercado Bitcoin, 8DAO, Taikai, Talent Protocol, Think&Dev, Blockful, Web3Dev, Bankless Brasil, The Defiant, Portal do Bitcoin, CriptoFácil e CoinTelegraph Brasil.

On this wise, the ETHSamba caravan is on its way.

Hackathons: Temporary Autonomous Zones

There is much discussion around the potential for distributed technologies to release societies from the extractive model and the grip of centralized agents. However, realizing this vision will require a radical change in the system. While one, two, or even three hackathons may not be enough to effect lasting social change, recurring events can help to reinforce the behavioral changes the society deserves. This has been demonstrated from ETHGlobal to the civil movement in Taiwan led by Audrey Tang.

As new technologies, ideas, and challenges continue to emerge, it is crucial that education and dissemination of these ideas keep pace and equip society with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive. The key is coordination, converging, and aggregating to consolidate into collective action, weaving the fabric that sustains our lives in society.

At ETHSamba, we see hackathons as a crucial execution layer and opportunity to drive this transformation before it collapses. This model can serve as an educational tipping point for accelerating mass adoption, moving from isolated islands to a "highly aligned online community with the capacity for collective action," as defined by Balaji Srinivasan in his concept of a Network State. Ultimately, this is why we believe it is necessary to remind ourselves of the urgent need to transform the web, moving as quickly as possible from a top-down notification feed to a transparent world owned and operated by its community.

Therefore, we would like to emphasize that this movement is not simply about selling tickets, but rather about catapulting and coordinating significant change in the market and society in Brazil and Latin America.

Next Ethereum Hard Fork: Samba Infinite Garden

To Wrap it up, we would like to express our immense gratitude to everyone involved in making the last event a success. We would like to thank the Bambas, who used their skills and creativity to create amazing solutions; the Volunteers, who worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly; the Mentors, who shared their knowledge and experience; the Speakers, who brought valuable perspectives about the future of Web3; the Vendors, who supported us in making the event happen; and finally, the Participants, who enriched the experience with their contributions and energy.

With ETHSamba, we planted a seed on an island, and from that seed grew a tree, underneath which hacking became samba. The music played during the event is a harbinger of the bright future that awaits us. While we may be able to move faster alone, we can go much further together. Now, we must connect an archipelago with bridges and plant our Infinite Garden in it.

We look forward to seeing you at the next ETHSamba Hack!

Our sincere gratitude,
