Illuvium Zero is the latest and last addition to the Illuvium game. It is a land-based game, where you build and upgrade buildings to mine resources such as fuel or Illuvial skins (NFTs). The main goal is to have a smoothly functioning city that produces valuable resources and NFT skins, which you can then sell or use in the main game.
I’ve spent over 20 hours playing this, experiencing its intricacies and challenges. I will use this article to write an overview of how the game works and the opportunities it brings in the crypto gaming space.
Right now, the barrier to entry is the floor price for Illuvium land, which is 0.37 eth. The higher the land tier the more resources you can mine. You will also be able to get land for free, but you can’t earn with it.
You start with clean empty land. The aesthetics will be based on the region the land belongs to. My main land (you also get a free-to-play one) is from the Brightland Steppes region: nice, peaceful green grass.
To start, you can build the Nexus, which is the ‘base’ building required by all the others. From there, the journey of building, mining, and upgrading begins. You will be able to mine 6 types of resources. 3 are used in-game (carbon, silicon, hydrogen) and 3 are used in the main game as well as this one (crypto, hyperion, solon). After a while of building and upgrading, you can build a Singularity Scanner, which allows scanning for Illuvials.
I like that the game requires some strategy when it comes to building and upgrading prioritization. Not only that, the way you construct paths and place your buildings also plays a major part in your output.
The gameplay loop is a big focus for our discussions on Gameonomics. It has to keep the player engaged and coming back. Here, the loop is simple: you mine resources you use for building and upgrading structures, which allow you more mining and so on. And yet, I am impressed with how well it hooked me. Most of the stuff you do in-game takes time to finish, which means you have to keep coming back to the game to collect your mined resources, upgrade new buildings, etc.
This does a great job of forming a habit, with the added incentive that in the end-game you can even make money selling your resources.
As Illuvium already accustomed us, even though it’s only a building game, the visuals are very satisfying. Every time you click on a building you can hear its characteristic sounds and the soundtrack paints a high-quality futuristic ambient.
One thing that makes Illuvium a tier 1 crypto gaming project on our Gameonomics list is the interoperability of their 3 games - Overworld, Arena, and Zero.
With Illuvium Zero you mine the resources that open-world players will use to upgrade their gear, capture illuvials, and provide NFTs for their captured Illuvials.
The game is also available on phones and tablets so that you can manage your buildings on the fly.
So you have an auto-battler, an open-world explorer, and a building game. You can find unique resources in each of them, that interplay with the other two, making Illuvium that much more engaging for a wider audience, more complex, and more rewarding.
Interoperability is one big thing that gives crypto games an edge over traditional gaming and I would like to see more of it in future projects.
In conclusion, after 20 hours of playing, I am certainly looking to further explore what the game has to offer. Not only is it very engaging to play with a quality gameplay loop, but you also enhance your experience for the other 2 games Illuvium has to offer, and you have the opportunity to earn real money by selling your resources to other players.
Even if you don’t want to play the game itself, you can invest in land and lend it out for others to use, sharing the revenue.
Overall, I believe this is a very important step forward in crypto gaming, showcasing the potential for interoperability.
