Women Run the World-How Web3 and NFT Will Pave the Way for Women Inclusion

There is a popular saying “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” Initially, the original poem and the now famous line referred to motherhood. However, in present day it can allude to the importance of women participation in every strata – be it public or private, including traditional male dominated spheres- such as banking, tech and web3.

Today, we talk about the changes in the system, despite the hindrance women
face. One of the major reasons why women are lesser in web3 is chiefly because
women tend to be more risk averse and require more knowledge on subject
areas.

Additionally, women tend to prefer a strong network comprising of other women who can offer support and counsel, when required. These patterns are par for the course in a field as volatile as crypto.

In our previous piece we had briefly touched upon the topic about why women were reluctant to be a part of the tech, finance and other traditional so-called 'men only’ spaces, there were a couple of points on how men were reluctant to do their part in making the space more inclusive.

Interestingly, the ‘boys-only' trend is witnessing a gradual shift. Shopify, an online sales platform, has 52% of women users, is venturing into creating an NFT marketplace. WomenRise, a campaign is focussed on onboarding 100,000 women into the Web3 space, by the end of 2022.

The scene today

As recently as February 2022, a rising number of women have been making strides in the web3 space. One such collective, appropriately titled BFF, has made some noteworthy progress in the space. Only a few months old, the community has over more than 50,000 members in its space which includes some women celebrities including, Mila Kunis, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paris Hilton and Tyra Banks.

Another collective that has made some splash known as the, Black Women Blockchain Council, to onboard more black women into web3. This community has been around since 2018. Some others such as WomenRise, Boss Beauties, Crypto Chicks are also currently ruling the roost in the NFT space. To be honest, this is just the tip of the iceberg and a lot more needs to be done.

How do we get there?

We can’t iterate this enough but education is the stepping stone to everything. If we want real life real-life adoption, we have to understand that correct awareness is the prerequisite to that. Supporting and educating women, before aiming to onboard them into web3 is the chief requirement

A few startups are already working towards that. One of the most notable ones include, Unstoppable Domains, that launched $10M Women of web3 initiative. To do so, they have tied up with nearly 65 initiatives to make this program a reality.

Additionally, our project, Girl With Secrets is working towards creating an ecosystem where women feel comfortable about seeking careers in crypto. We aim to create a program where women will be given the first preference when they seek out education and internship opportunities and our NFT collection has been curated to further that purpose.

Conclusion

Building a thriving community with an equitable number of members from either gender can help women in particular be more participatory in emerging forms of tech. Additionally, creating a safe space for women to express their thoughts (contrary or otherwise) can go a long way towards creating meaningful discourse instead of a male-dominated echo chamber.
