What started as a bit of fun has turned into a first-ever brand partnership for gmgn supply co.
If you haven’t heard, “apeinfluencer” Bored Becky is now the face of gm Cereal – the first of 100 community-based brands gmgn supply co. is planning to launch.
So how did Ashley Smith, the human behind Bored Becky, build a fast-growing brand for her Bored Ape NFT? We recently invited Ashley, who is also the co-host of the popular From the Blockchain podcast, to join us on Twitter Spaces to tell the story of how Bored Becky became her living, breathing alter ego.
Ashley explained that her original intent was semi-satirical, semi-anon sideline to her very public career as a successful Vancouver realtor. That all changed when Ashley led a community takeover of Fame Lady Squad, the first all-female generative avatar project. You may remember the Fame Lady Squad shocking the NFT world after its creators were outed as a bunch of Russian males. Ashley soon took back the reins of Fame Lady Squad and in doing so, quickly became a highly-respected female leader in the NFT space.
We’ve seen innovative uses of the IP rights granted by the Bored Ape Yacht Club to owners of the exclusive NFTs, from a restaurant to a music label. Still, few have bridged into physical, consumable products. With gm Cereal, we saw an opportunity to feature a Bored Ape on a box of cereal for the first time, bringing to life the Bored Becky persona in a more meaningful way.
In a first for the Bored Ape community, gmgn and our creative partners at Funday worked with top Hollywood prosthetic artist Jamie Grove to create a wearable mask of Bored Becky. Jamie has created makeup and creature effects for blockbuster movies and TV shows, including Star Trek, War of the Worlds, and Transformers so we knew he’d create a high-quality IRL representation.
While we’re sure Ashley can bust out Bored Becky’s famed dance moves, we recruited a character actress to help with our stunt. Armed with gm Cereal tees, gmgn supply co. flyers and a rogue camera crew, we unleashed Bored Becky at Bitcoin Miami.
She danced through the conference hall, snagged a selfie at the crypto bull, and even rubbed shoulders with crypto legends like Michael Saylor.
Activations and experiential marketing aren’t new to CPG, but this was a ground-breaking way to launch a new web3-focused brand. The gmgn team took the iconic Bored Ape IP out of the metaverse and dropped it squarely where the big kids of crypto were playing in Miami.
In many ways, our merger of digital assets and crypto culture into everyday life was a no-brainer way to launch a CPG DAO and gm Cereal and you can expect many more examples that bring the best of web 3.0 to life throughout our brands.
Keep an eye out at future NFT & crypto events like NFT NYC… you may be seeing Bored Becky and that gorgeous multi-colored grill with gm Cereal samples to give away.
Ape into Breakfast!
We invite the change-makers with all levels of experience and interest to join the gmgn community and help us lead the way in a transformative movement that celebrates the culture of web3 and turn the tables on CPG!
