Axolotarium: A University Conservation Initiative

INTRODUCTION

The Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a salamander endemic to Mexico, recognized for its extraordinary regenerative capacity, which allow it to completely restore the functionality of its limbs and organs. This unique trait makes it a crucial model for studies in regenerative medicine. Beyond its scientific value, the axolotl holds deep cultural significance in Mexico, symbolizing the connection between biodiversity and the country's natural heritage. This importance has given rise to initiatives such as the Axolotarium, an entity dedicated to the conservation, research, and education surrounding the axolotl. This article examines the importance of the axolotl, the role of the Axolotarium in its preservation as a registered PIMVS (Wildlife Management Units), and the outreach and dissemination to ensure a sustainable future for this emblematic species.

IMPORTANCE OF THE AXOLOTL

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a salamander endemic to the lakes of Xochimilco, a canal system located south of Mexico City, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The axolotl possesses the property to regenerate limbs, organs, and even parts of its brain and spinal cord, fully restoring their functionality. Additionally, it exhibits neoteny, a phenomenon where it retains larval characteristics in its adult stage, providing crucial information for understanding vertebrate evolution and development.

Moreover, the axolotl is of significant interest to science due to its genome, which is ten times more complex than that of humans, providing a rich source of data for genetic and biological research. Besides its scientific value, it also holds significant sociocultural importance in Mexico. Its association with the god Xólotl in pre-Hispanic myths and legends highlights its role in the country's cultural tradition. This relevance is reflected in various artistic and cultural expressions, where the axolotl is portrayed as a representative symbol of national identity.

Despite its importance, the axolotl is endangered, and its preservation is essential to maintain the ecological balance and biodiversity of its natural environment, making conservation efforts in the aquatic habitats of Xochimilco crucial.

OUR HISTORY

The inception of Axolotarium traces back to a recreational visit to the fish market in Mixuca, Mexico City, in 2022, by co-founders Ximena Gijón García and Jesús Alejandro Pérez Andrade. Initially, their goal was to find supplies for a Betta fish, but they unexpectedly encountered a stand selling axolotls in deplorable conditions- confined in plastic bags, biting each other, and sick.

Moved by the dire situation of the axolotls, the founders realized that simply purchasing the specimens, which would have constituted an illegal transaction, was not enough to address the broader conservation issues facing the Ambystoma genus. They decided to create a refuge that would comprehensively tackle these challenges. With the backing of Arkansas State University Campus Querétaro (ASUCQ), they turned their vision into reality by establishing Axolotarium.

The founders began by acquiring essential knowledge through certification in the management of Ambystoma mexicanum and conducting in-depth research on the care of this species. Starting with just two specimens and a single aquarium, they, through their dedication and continuous effort, gradually expanded their facilities, collection of specimens, and team.

Thus, Axolotarium was established as a center specialized in the protection and reproduction of the axolotl, as well as research, scientific dissemination, and environmental education. Its approach includes captive breeding programs, interdisciplinary research, awareness campaigns, and the development of university projects. To achieve these objectives, Axolotarium collaborates closely with academic institutions, government entities, and non-governmental organizations, all committed to the preservation of this emblematic species.

To manage and conserve wildlife species in authorized facilities, SEMARNAT established the category of PIMVS (Property or Facility that Manages Wildlife in Confined Form). This permit allows for the conservation, management, research, reproduction, and exhibition activities of species in a legal and regulated manner.

In alignment with these regulations, Axolotarium initiated the process to obtain recognition as a PIMVS, which was granted on May 22, 2024. This registration authorizes Axolotarium to conduct conservation, management, research, reproduction, and exhibition activities involving axolotls within a legal framework. To secure this registration, a detailed management plan was developed that covered the project description, specific objectives, and security and welfare measures for the specimens.
