BJJ meditations: How to think about Jiu Jitsu

As students and instructors, how do we think more critically about learning jiu jitsu within the modern information landscape?

On one hand, the internet and social media have done more to democratize the flow of information than the invention of the printing press. BJJ academies that were once information silos are now (for the most part) interconnected information hubs.

On the other, there’s a glut of information, some good, some bad. The modern jiu jitsu student walks a tightrope of deference to their instructor and self-authoring their own path through the art using this democratized information.

As instructors, it’s critical that we teach the principles and techniques of jiu jitsu. But looking ahead at the modern information landscape—and its likely evolution driven by AI—is it just as critical that we teach students to think critically about the principles and techniques of jiu jitsu? How do we do that?
