Jiu Jitsu will be whatever you want it to be.
Do you want it to make you tough? Jiu Jitsu will harden you. The pickpockets of Europe will size you up, see your ears, and think twice. But what happens when life demands a gentle touch?
Do you want it to make you a competitor? If you give it enough time and the right focus, Jiu Jitsu will walk into the arena with you. You may stand on the podium—you may not. What will you sacrifice to be all that you can? Who will miss your face at the dinner table?
Do you want to be fit? Jiu Jitsu will drop pounds, improve endurance, and add a bit of strength. But it will also break. It breaks bones, ligaments, cartilage, and wills. Jiu Jitsu does not care about the breaking.
Do you want to be happy? Jiu Jitsu will flood your system with endorphins. You’ll feel highs comparable to sex and upper drugs. And you will also plummet to depths of failure where no light falls.
Do you want it to make you wise—a skilled player of the meta game of life? It will. But, take yourself too seriously, and it will also make you pedantic, professorial, boring, and if you’re not careful, static.
Jiu Jitsu will be whatever you want it to be. But Jiu Jitsu gives and takes.
