Where are stored your NFTs ?

Dear NFT collectors, I’m pretty sure that you own items from collections that can be spoiled.

How is this possible? Shouldn’t be stored endlessly on this immutable thing we called blockchain?

Not really, and let be clear on one thing about JPEG NFTs:

Your image is never rarely on the blockchain, it would be way way way too expensive to upload it directly on Ethereum.

In broad terms, what you own on the blockchain is just a file with your name on it and a link that points to the place where your document is actually stored.

And here’s the point, the place hosting your JPEG - or whatever - can be a point of failure if it’s on a centralized and private server.

Famous collections like Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Cool Cats, or Chromie Squiggle made this choice - to the great displeasure of their community.

Dear Creators, sustainable and secured alternatives exist:

  • The most widely known is IPFS.

Using IPFS, your data are stored on a distributed file secured by nodes but to avoid storage space shortage, those nodes delete files considered as no longer needed.

Your precious document could be deleted if you don’t comply this Garbage collection rules. Pinning services like Pinata solve this problem. But if you don’t pay your subscription, they stop calling your document and so, it can be deleted.

  • The most elegant one is Arweave.

It’s a decentralized network where nodes are incentivized with a token ($AR) to store the data way over 200 years.

You can check on GemScore the quality of the collections you hold.
