After months of development, we’re excited to kick off our testnet trading tournament. The goal of the tournament is to provide a fun but competitive environment for people to get familiar with the LED system. The tournament is on Sepolia testnet so no real money is used, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be fierce competition - we’re giving the top three winners $1,000 in prizes.

What is LED?

The Liquid Energy Dollar project’s goal is to build an experimental new currency that tracks the value of energy instead of a government issued currency like USD. Energy is an ideal currency because it retains its buying power over time, unlike the inflationary version we use today. You can’t print energy - the more energy that we produce as a society, the lower the cost of living for everyone.

We track the price of energy by using the decentralized Bitcoin mining network and some math. Bitcoin mining consumes massive amounts of energy, allowing us to approximate a global energy index that isn’t tied to any one country or energy source. We cover more details in our previous article:

Why LED?

We believe we need better alternatives to government-backed money than what exists today. Cryptocurrencies fill part of this role, but are highly volatile and speculative. We need experiments like LED that give global citizens more options to opt-out of inflation and weaponized monetary policies. Through thoughtful experimentation we’ll iterate to a better form of money that empowers everyone, not a select few.
