Bridging is one of the components that help Ethereum more efficiently handle a higher volume of activity, while also connecting Ethereum with other blockchains.
Blockchain networks exist as parallel universes. They are typically unaware of each other—Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Linea, for example, are all separate blockchains. So that begs the question, “How do you get things from one chain to another?”
Enter, blockchain bridges. As the name suggests, bridges connect separate networks, allowing you to move tokens from one network to another. Without them, each network would remain isolated.

To take full advantage of any web3 use cases, you need digital assets that exist on a blockchain. Onramps are services that help you convert your fiat currency, say US dollars in your bank account, into crypto on a blockchain.
Think of onramps as the pathway you would take to transition from a local road on to a highway when traveling. The onramps services are the pathway that connects your fiat money to the highway of digital assets.
In the context of L2s, on-ramps refers to the process of moving assets from a Layer 1 such as Ethereum to an L2 and is known as bridging.
Understanding the risks associated with bridging and on-ramps is crucial before one engages with the activities on an L2.
Key risks include smart contract bugs that hackers can exploit and get ahold of your funds; centralization, since many DeFi platforms and some L2s are build, run, and controlled by small set of validator/parties; liquidity risks that may make it difficult to sell or exchange some tokens at their market value.
To protect yourself against these risks, you can use trusted DeFi platforms and companies that have proven themselves over the years. You can also use a variety of platforms and investments to spread your risk in case of hacks, dropping values, or malicious teams.
