Hey everyone, Bit here. Time for another blog post, this time related to the sudden flare-up in NFT discussion caused by the International Olympic Committee.
In some posts on Twitter today, it was revealed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was abandoning the long-standing video game series “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games” in favor of esports and NFTs. I can’t figure out how many people were OK with the esports part because EVERYONE outraged at the NFT part.
Here’s a post from DiscussingFilm on Twitter/X about this:
Yes, the IOC has already made an NFT in a partnership with nWay Games and it was promoted through Coinbase’s Onchain Summer (https://wallet.coinbase.com/ocs). A website promoting the NFT and a mobile Olympics game is at https://olympicsgo.nway.com.
Even though I have been talking about cryptocurrency and NFTs recently, this decision by the IOC baffles me. They decided to completely switch to a different partner to make an Olympics-themed game as well as an NFT collection instead of sticking with two of the most recognizable video game franchises of all time.
A better idea from the IOC would have been to just continue to support the Mario & Sonic Olympics series while bringing out the NFT collection and possibly pursuing esports in the Olympics. It would be really cool if a competitive video game like Counter-Strike or Valorant could be played on the biggest athletic stage in the world.
If anyone wants to learn some about crypto or NFTs, I would recommend looking at what I’ve written on web3.littlebitstudios.com. I’m also releasing a YouTube video about the NFT bubble and how the landscape of the NFT world has changed.
Anyway, this has been Bit, and I’ll see you next time.
