All about the Art
This collection brings together several mediums that have been interwoven on our life as art over the last decade: water magic, internet wizardry & 35 mm photography (20 years on that one). It is deeply personal as interwoven in the work is own personal transformation in the realm of love. Ten years ago when the images were taken was a time of heartbreak & loss and through our own practices including the creation of these magical mists like Purple Coast spray, this energy has transmuted into one of unconditional love for all beings especially self-love.
It’s about turning heartbreak into fertilizer for learning how to love unconditionally starting with oneself. The spray included with each photograph is intended to work aurically to support this process in all who are misted.
Because this collection centers on this transformation, it is very personal and we wanted to find a way to bring the experiences of our friends and collectors as well. So each image will be available to title for the collector so that they are bringing in their own creative energy into this project as well. This is very important to us that the digital and blockchain component be interactive and show a unique use case for our this sort of art can evolve and engage the collective.
Bare the Soul
Since the days before the tech of NFTs was developed, we have dreamed of bringing our 15+ year film archive into the digital sphere. The larger project and iteration of that work hasn’t happened yet but with Purple Coast we are taking the first step to bringing the analog archive of our experiences at the turn of the millenium to the web utilizing the powerful technological framework of the Ethereum blockchain.
Our art is life in the subtle diffuse yet powerful energy of setting a tone, holding a space, transforming space time in the direction of liberation through lifestyle art of living and beholding the joy of experience.
We always mused about how this would go and would get too nervous to share our work mostly because of it’s autobiographical nature. Narratives of ‘we-arent-professional’ have been taking up space in the self monologue. Yet the fear of sharing has been overwritten by the realization that this is a part of our soul and a part of our soul that longs to be expressed and shared.
We hope that our story resonates as it brings lost parts of our soul to life and offers them to the edge of the sea. At the Purple Coast, we release our cares and expectations and emerge after our feet have been at the water renewed with the shimmering vestige of otherworldly whisps of dark matter weaving itself around dazzling lightening fast light as the waves meet the shore. This experience is happening in several dimensions. Enter the Purple Mist.
Alchemical NFT
There are certain types of art that are well near impossible to replicate or experience on the internet. The art that we have been focusing our attention on for many years is the art of creating magical mists. These intricate mists are only really experienced in person, when your energy field is bathed in the tiny magical particles of essential oils, crystal essences, hydrosols and salts.
One of our most beloved formulas was created in 2015 and we have iterated and evolved it since this moment creating a really special and magical mist. This mist was inspired by a literal place - a very special beach on the Pacific Coast that has Purple Sand. Yes, you heard right... The beach has purple sand.
Our first visit to this Purple Sand Beach was in 2012 and came at a time that was both a tumultuous shift and a time of deep personal growth for us. All of the base images in the original collection are photographs taken by MAB on a Canon AE1 camera in film. The film negatives were scanned and the scanned images are what is uploaded to the blockchain. For the first collection, we have not edited the images, the gauzy style is intentional and we wanted to capture the rawness of the light as expressed on film as these analog treasures are converted to the digital blockchain.
Deep Collaboration
So much of this art is made in collaboration. Collaboration with the waters, the plant souls, the muses of my heart, and the friends who stood beside me in my visions over the years.
The digital collaboration behind this project stems from a professional friendship and collaboration of over ten years. When these purple coast images were taken, Arithmetric and I were actually working on a very involved web 2.0 build which was a donation system for a very large non-profit that had ties to the hedge fund industry. It was an extremely intense project and we then followed that to work together on some other large implementations for many larger organizations.
The ethos that brought us together was open source and the possibility of the web for everyone. Building for the collective, building tools to help non-profits. To me, the ethos of the web - the aspect of currency and the nature of smart contracts is just another long development in the building of the web and online communities that I have been a part of since 2009.
Interactive Mint
We want to be able to answer the question, why NFT?
Why do this on the blockchain? and just selling our art in the form of a photograph or spray is possible too but we chose this medium because of the interactive community energy field that it allows us to create on the morphogenic field of this planet.
An important ethos our life and creative philosophy has always been about co-creation. In the most basic sense that every moment we live is an experience that is created by our own interactions with the matter of all types we encounter.
When putting this particular soul work on the blockchain, we loved the idea of co-creating titles for the works at mint. Yet we also felt like we wanted to create and set a mood with the word choices.
Our collectors will be able to participate fully in the creation of the NFT onto the blockchain itself and create a title by selecting five words divined from the Purple Mist.
We are excited because these titles will also be on-chain so we can integrate them into a future release where the titles become even more interwoven into the art.
Collective experiment over profits
There have been many threads in the NFT space over the last few years. It’s a space full of innovation and there are also scams, rugpulls, and projects divined from memes that cash out really quickly. Our goal with this project is to set a tone for the long term. Having worked in internet and web since our days of building community experiences for web 2.0 communities, we look at this as yet another chapter and element to our reputation and expression that has been our unique impact in the world.
Our goals are as follows, we are looking to this project to:
- encourage folks to understand the usefulness of NFTs as a concept to build and showcase innovative ways of interaction with the experience of minting an art NFT
- connect and appeal to people who are interested in being a part of our co-creative vision
- have a tiered pricing structure for the mint that creates space for folks to enter at different levels
- attract people who want to be a part of the artistic experience
- Appeal to NFT collectors in the space who are looking for a community focused on the depth of life as art living exploring.
- give my long time friends and contacts who have known me for many years an opportunity to enter the NFT space in a trusted way
Future Direction
Our intention with Purple Coast is to show what’s possible from a technical perspective and provide blocks that can be built on for the future. In addition to being a deep art share of MAB, the intention here is to be a showcase for an interactive web3 experience.
We have ideas for a future 1111 piece collection for 1111.codes frequency that provides funding and support to some of the various mutual aid projects we have participated in over the years. As many of those who have been following us or interacting, we have prioritized energy in supporting communities in the Amazon region of Peru.
We also have larger visions for lifestyle brand that we are not ready to disclose fully yet but we are excited to plant the seeds and grow the technology.
