This analysis is part of a data challenge brought by Desights, a platform built by the Ocean Protocol to .
If you’re not familiar with the latter, Ocean Protocol is paving the way for a new data economy using the power of blockchain. They provide several services, like earning and trading mechanisms, data challenges, and the Ocean Market, where datasets, reports, algorithms and more, can be published on Web3 decentralized storage infrastructures like Arweave and IPFS.
Desights team is focused on bringing Data Science challenges, that are launched every 2 to 3 weeks. Participants are eligible to gain a portion of a $5000 pool in mOCEAN tokens, by providing insightful reports that are published in the Ocean Market.
This time, the challenge was about the Doug Score Dataset. Doug DeMuro writes articles and makes videos about cars. His YouTube channel has more than 4 million subscribers.
In this dataset, there are ten distinct categories, each evaluated on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1
represents the lowest score, and 10
signifies the highest, resulting in a maximum Doug Score of 100. These ten categories are divided into two distinct groups: Weekend
and Daily
. The first refers to the weekend driving enjoyment. In contrast, the Daily
categories concentrate on a car's suitability and practicality for everyday use.
There are 5 categories for Weekend Appeal
:
Styling
Acceleration
Handling
Fun Factor
Cool Factor
And 5 categories for Daily Usability
:
Features
Comfort
Quality
Practicability
Value
There are other features like the car’s model and brand, the year, the country and more.
⚠️ Note: Cars are judged against all other cars. It means these categories aren’t relative, but rather absolute.
The brands on this dataset are from several countries, let’s take a look at the pie chart below to visualize the portion of each country.
Let’s now take a look at the top 20 brands that performed better concerning the weekend appeal features:
There are more than 580 models in the dataset, which makes it difficult to compare all of them graphically. Hence we can take a look a the top performers concerning the weekend appeal.
The Koenigsegg Regera scored 10 in all of the weekend appeal features, only Style
stayed a little bit behind. The Doug Score
is one of the highest, meaning that it also scored pretty well for the daily usability features (remember Doug Score = Weekend Appeal + Daily Usability
).
As for Mclaren Elva, it has the same weekend appeal scores as the Koenigsegg Regera, but a slightly lower Doug Score
.
Concerning the daily usability, let’s take a look at the following examples:
The BMW X7 is strong in Features
and Practicality
, its Doug Score
is less than the weekend appeal models we’ve seen before.
The Cullinan Black Badge scores the maximum in Features
and Comfort
. While its Doug Score is higher than the BMW X7, it is still below the ones from the weekend appeal models.
The Value
feature, from Daily Usability, explains how much a car is worth its current market value. When it comes to the brands, by making a mean of this feature for all the vehicles in the dataset grouped by brand, I got the following results.
Rivian scores first with 8 out of 10, and is followed by FIAT and Tesla respectively. Rivian is also one of the most balanced brands, it is well-placed in daily usability, and weekend appeal and scores above 70 for the Doug Score
.
However, none of the Rivian models scored 10 for Value
. These are the top 4 models concerning the Value
feature:
