The Cabo Sardão lighthouse was part of the proposals included in Pereira da Silva's project: (...) it is very convenient to establish a 3rd order lighthouse there, which is sufficient to clarify this part of the coast.
The General Lighting and Beaconing Plan approved in 1883 proposed the installation of a 2nd order lighthouse at Cabo Sardão, with light distributed in groups of 2 flashes, one white and the other red.
The lighthouse would not be built until after the entry into operation of the Commission appointed in 1902, which proposed a 3rd order device, a small model, for Cabo Sardão, showing equidistant white flashes every 10 seconds.
The descriptive memory and justification for the construction of the lighthouse, would end up being elaborated only in 1912, with a budget of 29,000.00 reis.
It went into operation on April 15, 1915. The optical apparatus is of the 3rd order, large model (500mm focal length), whose rotation is produced by a watchmaking machine. The light source is glowing oil vapor.
Electrified in 1950, through the assembly of generating sets, the light source became a 3000 watt lamp.
In 1984, it was connected to the public distribution grid, starting to work with a 1000-watt lamp, and in the same year it was also automated.
In 1999 major renovation works were carried out in the building.
