The descriptive memorandum for the construction of the lighthouse was presented by Ricardo Peyroteu on June 21, 1884 to the Direcção Geral dos Correios Telegraphos e Pharoes do Reino.

The work was budgeted at 2 contos de reis, plus 123$986 reis for unforeseen expenses.

For the port of Lagos, the Lighthouses and Beacons Commission in its General Plan, approved in 1883, projected, in addition to the Ponta da Piedade port light, a fixed red light in the Lagos cove, with a 5th order apparatus.

The Ponta do Altar lighthouse was established on January 1, 1893. It is located in Ponta do Altar, south of the Portimão bar. The lighthouse tower is 10 meters high and 32 meters high. A 5th order optical apparatus was installed, the light source being a petroleum lamp giving fixed white light.

In 1921, 38 m2 of annexed land was purchased for the construction of a cistern, repair of the outer walls and expansion of the deposit, these charges amounting to seven hundred thousand reis.

The light source started using acetylene gas in 1954.

In 1948, the lighthouse light, which was fixed, became occult, red in color, with a luminous range of 10 miles.

In 1976 the building was connected to the public electricity distribution network, however the light source continued to be powered by gas until 1983, when it was electrified and operated with a mixed exchanger (electricity / gas).

The lighthouse was automated in 1992 with the GISMAN system, and at the time it was remotely controlled from the lighthouse on Cabo de S. Vicente.

In 1999, a major interior recovery and remodeling intervention was carried out, returning to having only one residence.

On June 29, 2001 the light color was changed from red to white, with a range of 16 miles.
