The Palace of the Counts of Castro Guimarães, also referred to as Torre de São Sebastião, is located on Avenida Rei Humberto de Itália, in the parish of Cascais and Estoril, municipality of Cascais, district of Lisbon, in Portugal.

History

It was built in the 19th century by Jorge O'Neill, nephew of the 1st Viscount of Santa Monica and descendant of the Earls of Clanaboy and Princes of Tyrone, Kings of Ulster and, sometimes, High Kings of Ireland, for his summer home . In 1910 it was sold to the 1st Count of Castro Guimarães. The architectural project for the palace was created by Francisco Vilaça and the architects responsible for the building were Albrecht Haupt and Luigi Manini.

The building is classified as a Property of Public Interest through Decree No. 45 of November 30, 1993.

Nowadays it retains its original layout, housing the Conde de Castro Guimarães Museum, which brings together all the pieces from the counts' vast art collection.

Characteristics

It is a revivalist style palace, located in a small cove. At high tides, the base of the building is touched by the waves. Its style combines Romanticism — in vogue at the time — with the appearance of a medieval château, which culminates in the large tower. It is surrounded by an interesting garden.

The building has elements of Irish origin, such as the shamrocks present on the wrought iron door and in the painting on the ceiling of the Shamrock Room, the museum's entrance room, and the coat of arms of Jorge O'Neill and his ancestors, painted on the roof of the turret.
