The Parish of Cristo Rei de Algés was created on November 15, 1966, and until then was integrated into the parish of São Romão de Carnaxide. The parish priest of Carnaxide since 1943, Father Manuel dos Reis Escudeiro, then became the first parish priest of the Parish of Algés, where he already resided. He remained parish priest until 1976, when work began on the new church.

Until November 20, 1977, the date of the dedication of the new church, Algés' parish church was the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Graças, which had been offered to the Patriarchate by a family from Algés (Alice and Polycarpo Anjos). The current church was built exactly in the same place where the aforementioned chapel was built.

The dedication of the church took place with Father João Ferreira, who served as parish priest between 1976 and 1998.

Between 1998 and 2002 Father Armando Duarte was parish priest, between January 2002 and September 2005 Father António Francisco Gonçalves Simões was parish priest, between September 2005 and September 2016 Father Daniel Batalha Henriques was parish priest. Father António Manuel de Nóbrega Figueira is currently parish priest.
