The General Plan approved in 1883 provided for the construction of a 4th order lighthouse. The budget drawn up in 1881 anticipated that its cost would be 7,962$000 réis, 2,000$000 of which for buildings and the rest for the lantern and device.

In 1891, Adviser Almeida de Ávila spoke about the need to install a 4th or 5th order light “at the highest point of the large islet outside Ponta do Carapacho”.

The 1902 Commission also ruled on the subject, proposing a 5th order device for Ponta do Carapacho, showing three white flashes every 10 seconds.

The land for the construction of the lighthouse was purchased for the amount of 6,927$50.

The Carapacho lighthouse, however, would only be established on May 26, 1956. It is located in Ponta do Carapacho. The height of the tower is 14 meters and the altitude is 191 meters. Initially, it was equipped with a 5th order lenticular apparatus (187.5 mm focal length), the light source being acetylene gas incandescence that gave groups of 2 flashes of red light. The glow sleeve was mounted on an automatically operated sleeve changer. The rotation of the optics was also ensured by a gas engine. Annual gas consumption was around 11,000 liters.

In 1961 the light changed to white.

The lighthouse started to turn on and off automatically through a solar valve in 1978. It was electrified in 1987 by connecting it to the public power distribution network.

The optical apparatus was dismantled, giving rise to a 6th order fixed optic (150 mm focal length). The light source became a 50 watt halogen lamp.

From 1995 it was automated with the APCL -10 system.
