The lighthouse of S. Jorge is located in Ponta de S. Jorge in the north of Madeira Island. It was designed in 1948 and came into operation on April 12, 1959. Its structure consists of a cylindrical tower with ribs and an annex building. It has a height of 14 meters and an altitude of 271 meters. Initially it was equipped with a 3rd order drum dioptric optic, large model (500mm focal length), the light source being gas incandescence.
In 1962 the lighthouse was connected to the public electrical distribution network; the light source used until then was replaced by a new mixed gas/electric equipment.
The lighthouse was automated in 1986 with the SIRIUS system and the light source was 12V 50W halogen lamps.
In 1995, it underwent a new renovation, with the APCL-10 system being installed with 12V 100W halogen lamps, which give it a luminous range of 15 miles.
