The Palácio da Igreja Velha, located in Vermoim, was declared a Property of Municipal Interest in 2022. The classification, approved today in a Chamber Meeting by the Municipal Executive, includes the Palácio da Igreja Velha, the Chapel of S. Francisco de Assis and the Cruzeiro of the Palácio da Igreja Velha, and the surrounding area was designated as a Special Protection Zone.
“It is about valuing a historical heritage, of great architectural relevance” highlights the Mayor, Mário Passos. “This classification is a way of ensuring its preservation” says the mayor.
The Palácio da Igreja Velha, dating from 1881, is protected by Planning Plan II – Built and Archaeological Heritage and in Annex I of the regulation of the Municipal Master Plan, currently in force, being an example of architecture made by Brazilians. -19th century journey, with features and a unique monumental scale in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão.
It was subject to requalification works between 2012 and 2015 that allowed it to maintain its architectural quality and good state of conservation. Thanks to this intervention, the project, designed by the architecture firm Visioarq, received the International Architecture Prize «Architizer A+ awards» in 2017, and, in 2018, the Januário Godinho Rehabilitation Prize.
It should be noted that, in addition to the Palácio da Igreja Velha, there are two other properties in the Famalicense municipality, classified as of municipal interest, among them, the Solar de Vila Boa, in the parish of Joane, classified in 1977, and the Capela de São Gonçalo, in the parish of Cavalões, classified in 1978.
