More than a restaurant, “Zé Varunca” is a family project that spans three generations, who, since 1981, have been working with the Alentejo heart and soul on the flavors of this region. Under the influence of his mother, José Varunca de Sousa has been working in the hotel and restaurant industry, taking Alentejo across borders ever since.

A daily dedication to Alentejo gastronomic tradition and quality As expected, our story begins in Alentejo. The roots are Estremoz and the Family. It was through the influence of his mother Maria Josefina Varunca that José Varunca de Sousa opened “Restaurante Zé Varunca” in 1981.
A cook in one of the most emblematic places in the city of Estremoz, “Águia D’Ouro”, Maria Josefina Varunca awakens in her son a desire that would continue for more generations of the “Varunca family”.
Today, a new generation of the family works, together with their parents, in what is, and has always been, a family project.
Rúben and João Sousa are today the strong men of the “Zé Varunca” restaurants, always supported by the experience and wisdom of “Zé Varunca” and Teresa Sousa.
