The Sanctuary of Penha, is located on Monte da Penha, in Guimarães. Its full name is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Carmo da Penha, and also very often the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Penha.
The works began on August 6, 1930, according to the project by the architect Marques da Silva.
The Sanctuary of Penha is a work built almost entirely in granite from the region, with the aim of integrating it into the surrounding environment. Its lines, modern for its height, do not follow the traditional forms, being always straight lines, being integrated in the "Art Deco" style of the 30's.
It suffered a fire on February 13, 1939, where the image of Senhora da Conceição and the carving that formed and garnished the Main Altar were destroyed, thus delaying its construction.
The inauguration took place on September 14, 1947 without the presence of the architect Marques da Silva who had died 3 months earlier.
