There are some, such as the Jerónimos Monastery or the Belém Tower, that blend in with the city itself. However, the list of relevant constructions is much longer. A look at the Basilica da EstrelaLocated opposite Jardim da Estrela, this vast church is also known as the Royal Basilica and Convent of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus. Dated from the century. XVIII, the emergence of this temple is umbilically linked to the devotion of D. Maria I, daughter of D. José I.

In 1760, when the still princess married Infant D. Pedro (future D. Pedro III) she made a promise to the Most Holy Heart of Jesus: a religious building would be erected, if she had a male child to inherit the throne. However, some difficulties arose.

From the outset, the kingdom was going through a difficult phase, due to the reconstruction of the capital following the terrible earthquake of 1755. In this context, technical and economic means were concentrated on the recovery of Lisbon. In 1779, D. Maria I already occupied her seat on the throne and, her wish having been satisfied, she ordered the construction of the temple to begin.

The infant — baptized as D. José — died years before the works were completed. Even so, D. Maria I kept her promise and the construction of the Basilica da Estrela was completed in 1790.

Features of the Estrela Basilica

The construction of the religious temple of Estrela was in charge of the architects of the School of Mafra, presenting characteristics of the baroque and neoclassical styles.

In the wide interior of the Basílica da Estrela, gray, pink and yellow tones dominate, as well as several paintings by Pompeo Batoni (Italian painter from the Rococo period).

It is also worth mentioning the fact that the temple is equipped with two incredible organs, both from the 17th century. XVIII.
