In Ponta do Pargo is the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, inaugurated in 1950 and which is the center of much devotion for the people of the parish of Ponta do Pargo.
The origin of the devotion to Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte results from the first century Christian tradition, called “Dormição da Assunta”, revealing that Our Lady died (hence the term “dormição” in reference to the sleep of death).
At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by most of the apostles who buried her in a tomb that had never been used, located in Gethsemane, the place of Jesus' agony, in Jerusalem.
Three days later, another apostle arrived and wanted to see the Virgin Mary one last time. The tomb was then opened in the presence of all and, to everyone's surprise, the body of Saint Mary was not there. There was only a strong scent of flowers. And they understood that Our Lady was assumed, that is, raised body and soul to heaven. From then on, they began to worship the «Dormição da Assunta». Then came the cult of Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, which was perpetuated in the Church.
The cult was introduced by Pope Sergius I, whose pontificate took place between 687 and 701, having placed his feast on the 15th of August.
In Madeira there are two chapels dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte: one in Ponta do Pargo and the other in the parish of São João, in the parish of Ribeira Brava.
