The Igreja dos Carmelitas or Igreja dos Carmelitas Descalços is located in the parish of Vitória, in the city of Porto, in Portugal. It began to be built in 1616 and was completed in 1628. The interior decoration would only be completed in 1650. It was classified as a National Monument on May 3, 2013, together with the Carmo Church built later from 1752 onwards. both Churches joined by the so-called Casa Escondida do Porto, just over a meter wide.
The church belonged to the extinct convent, today occupied by the National Republican Guard.
Chronology
With the authorization of D. Filipe II of Portugal, the religious of the Third Order of Carmelites began the construction of the convent in 1616. The first phase was completed in 1622, the year in which the Carmelites settled there. Between 1632 and 1633 the main altarpiece and the tabernacle were installed.
Architecture
Facade
The granite stonework façade has three entrances with round arches, topped by an equal number of niches, with images of Saint Joseph, Saint Teresa of Jesus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the center. The upper body contains three large windows, the central one being rectangular and the two lateral ones in the shape of a rectangular trapezoid. Finishing off the façade is a triangular pediment topped by balusters.
It has a bell tower on the left side, covered in monochromatic blue tiles, topped by a bulb-shaped dome.
Interior
The interior of the Carmelite Church has a Latin cross plan, with a single nave, six side chapels and a narthex at the entrance. The gilded carvings, in the Baroque and Rococo style, stand out in the side chapels and the main altar. The design of the main altarpiece was designed by Joaquim Teixeira de Guimarães and executed by José Teixeira Guimarães.
