The Monte church built in the 17th century. XVIII, presents an architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. In the left side chapel is the tomb of Charles of Habsbourg, the last emperor of Austria.

The Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was built in the 16th century. XVIII on the foundations of the primitive chapel of the century. XV, by order of Adão Gonçalves, son of Gonçalo Aires Ferreira, squire of the Infante and inhabitant of the island. Later, due to the demand of the cult and an increase in the number of faithful, the church was expanded. In 1748 an earthquake left the church destroyed, having been rebuilt in 1818. On the main altar is the image of Nossa Senhora do Monte, venerated since the beginning of the settlement of the island of Madeira.

In the side chapel of this church is the tomb of Charles Habsburg, Emperor of Austria, Hungary and Bohemia, exiled in 1921 to Madeira. Inside the church, it is also possible to appreciate beautiful pieces of goldwork carved from the 16th and 19th centuries. XVII XVIII. The 15th of August is the day of Nossa Senhora do Monte, patroness of the Diocese and the city of Funchal.
