The Sines lighthouse is part of Pereira da Silva's project, approved in 1870, which also provides for the creation of the lighthouses of Montedor, Leça or Leixões, Aveiro, N.S. da Vitória (later passed over by Penedo da Saudade), Cabo Sardão, Cabo Carvoeiro do Algarve and Ponta de S. António (V.R.S.António). In this work, the author also reports on the lighting of the ports in 1865 and proposes that a special study be carried out to determine «what are the best positions in which to place the pharoes and port lights».
The lighthouse came into operation in April 1880, with a tower 22 meters high and 41 meters high. The optical apparatus was a 2nd order flashlight and the light source was incandescent by oil vapor with fixed light. The backup light was a constant level nozzle.
In 1914 improvement works were carried out on the building and in 1915 the optical lantern was replaced by a 3rd order Fresnel lenticular apparatus, large model (500mm focal length). The rotation of the optics was produced by the watchmaking machine. The light that until then was fixed became rhythmic.
With the intention of installing a radio lighthouse, in 1948 a house was built. In the same year, the lighthouse was electrified using a "Reiner" generating set. The light source became electrical incandescence, with oil vapor incandescence as a reserve.
In 1950, the lighthouse was electrified with energy from the public network, and panels were also mounted on the optics, to give it the air-maritime character.
The radio lighthouse was installed in 1953 (deactivated in the nineties).
The power of the light source was reduced in 1982, and a 1000W lamp was installed.
As there was a need to raise the lighthouse tower so that the light could be more visible, work began in 1992. The lantern, optical apparatus and all the material that was in the tower were removed. (This material can be found in the lighthouse museum of S. Marta). Meanwhile, until the completion of the works, a temporary lighthouse was installed.
These works would only end in 1995, leaving the lighthouse tower with another six meters in height. A new (hybrid) optical device was assembled, this one of the 4th order, with a rotation motor of a "PRB – 21". The lighthouse tower was 28 meters high and 48 meters high.
