The Rua Augusta Triumphal Arch is a triumphal arch located in the northern part of Praça do Comércio, over Rua Augusta, in Lisbon, Portugal. Its construction was scheduled in 1759, as part of the Pombaline reconstruction after the destruction of downtown Lisbon by the 1755 earthquake, with a design by Eugénio dos Santos. Until 1843, the arch only rose to the height of its cymatium, in a set of composite colonnades placed in 1815, awaiting the crowning. A tender was then opened for the completion of the work, won by the architect Veríssimo José da Costa. The work on the triumphal arch, which was already closed in 1862 on the occasion of the wedding of King Luís I, as can be seen in photographs from the time, was only completed in 1873.
In the upper part of the arch, sculptures by Célestin Anatole Calmels can be seen, while sculptures by Vítor Bastos can be seen at a lower level. Calmels' sculptures represent Glory crowning Genius and Valour. The sculptures by Vítor Bastos represent Nuno Álvares Pereira, Viriato, Vasco da Gama and the Marquis of Pombal. On the left side, the Tagus River, and on the right, the Douro River, also created by the sculptor Vítor Bastos. The Tagus and Douro rivers delimit the region where the Lusitanos allegedly lived.
The text inscribed at the top of the arch refers to the grandeur of the Portuguese Empire and the discovery of new peoples and cultures. VIRTVTIBVS MAIORVM VT SIT OMNIBVS DOCVMENTO.PPD “To the Virtues of the Elders, so that it may serve as a teaching to all. Dedicated at public expense”.
Since the 9th of August 2013 that is possible, using an elevator and two flights of steep stairs, to reach the viewpoint at the top of the Arch. During the first year it was open, it was visited by 130,000 people.
In 2021, it ceased to be supervised by the Government, becoming the responsibility of the Chamber.
