Life and work

Almeida Garrett (1799/1854). João Batista da Silva Leitão de Almeida Garrett occupies one of its “founding” places in our cultural and literary development due to the pioneering and preponderant role he played in one of the “crises” that most metamorphosed the face of the Nation: the one that, during the first half of the century. The 19th century – a period coinciding with the writer's life – corresponded, in the political-social field, to the difficult implementation of liberalism and, in the artistic field, to the romantic “revolution”.

Thinking about Portugal and participating in the construction of the new public “order” are inextricably linked in Garrett to the questioning of the “self” and existence, asking him, so to speak, for renewed forms of expression.

His poetic discourse uses multiple neoclassical registers: enthusiastic, elegiac or facetious odes, tragedies that evoke tyrannicides, such as Cato or Merope, farces that mock reactionism or existential malaise, among others.
