Life and work

Adeodato Barreto – Goa (1905/1937). Portuguese-Goan poet and writer was born in Margão, in the former state of India under Portuguese administration, and died in Coimbra.

His works contain important archetypes and paradigms of Hindu culture. In his poems one can observe the notions of eternal return and transmigration of souls, anchors of Indian philosophy.

The author's posthumous publication – “The Book of Life” – contains poems whose inspiration and themes were found in the rich source of Indian culture, reflecting his totally oriental mind.

He was also a republican and opponent of Salazar's dictatorship and a citizen of the always eternal and poignant Coimbra, the place of all confluences and all contestations.
