The Igreja da Luz de Lagos, also referred to as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, is a church located in the village and parish of Luz, in the municipality of Lagos, in the Algarve region, in Portugal.
The main chapel of the Church of Luz de Lagos has been classified as a Public Interest Building since 1944.
Description
In the body of the church, there were four altars, two on the right and two on the left. On the right side, there was the altar of souls and Saint Peter. On the left side, there was the altar of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, together with Nossa Senhora da Encarnação (an image that returned, however, to the chapel of Espiche) and the altar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, with on the same left side a pulpit.
In the main chapel, there are Nossa Senhora da Luz and, on each side, São Romão and Santo Estêvão.
In this church, there is a unique baptismal font in the Algarve region, with seven corners that signify the seven sacraments.
The church has a picturesque location, very close to the sea, and it is possible to contemplate it together with the sea.
History
It is not known in what year the hermitage, today the chancel, was built. It is known, however, that the image of Nossa Senhora da Luz was captured by the Moors, when they frequented the bay of Lagos. On the chancel's dome, you can read 1521 and some Gothic letters, whose meaning is unknown.
