Mail3 AMA with .bit

We are glad to have Oxyful from the Mail3 team here today.

Could you please introduce yourself before we get into the AMA questions?

Thanks wuxian.

Hi guys, this is Oxyful from the Mail3 team, I really excited introduce the Mail3 to the .bit community.

Let me do a quick intro about Mail3.

Mail3 is a brand new Web3 communication protocol with boundless possibility and forward compatibility.

It uses blockchain based account and decentralized service guarantees security, privacy and self-sovereign.

We believe the web3 data that users accumulated on-chain is a perfect filter to form a valuable, effective and serious social network.

Mail3 provides wallet as the identity, supports all blockchain support.

All of .bit users can use Mail3 now.

If you are the owner of satoshi.bit, your Mail3 address will be satoshi.bit@mail3.me.

What’s the difference compared to existing email services such as Gmail and Outlook?

It’s basically the same as the difference between a web2 app and a web3 dApp.

First of all, Mail3 uses crypto wallet to authenticate users instead of password, which makes it more secure and composable. But that’s only the most superficial and obvious trait of Mail3.

The true attraction of Mail3 is the blockchain related features. You could use a global decentralized domain name such as ENS and DID.id as your mail address. Also your holding assets, on-chain activities, token transaction records could be the perfect identity of yourself, with which the anti-spam system would work much better than the web2 mails.

So Mail3 extends web2 mail system with token and on-chain global data, it is not only used to fix the problem of web2 mail, but also to bring out more imaginations.

Will Mail3 support POP3/IMAP client?

From technology side, it’s easy to support POP3/IMAP client, because it has been developed and iterated for more than 10 years.

However the tradeoff to a web3 protocol is unacceptable.

With mail client, users would lose web3 native features such as on-chain reputation based filter, token incentive, DID integration, and so on.

We still think about it, but we prefer to building a better webmail now. We believe to embrace the new things, we have to overcome the product’s small defects in the early days sometimes.

What is the profit model of Mail3?

Mail3 is free for most of the end users.

But if you need large decentralized storage capacity, or high service priority, you must to pay for it or stake Mail3 token (in the future).

This a billion target user market, it would be very profitable even with only 0.1% of paid users.

Besides, we will launch the community mail feature in the near future. With this feature, the 3rd-part project operator could select a group of users with the same token portfolio to send group mails.

It’s a very effective user reach method, and sender needs to pay for it.

What do you think about Mail3 mobile version?

It’s on the way. Our technology architecture is easy to port to mobile device.

I believe the mobile app can be done in a few weeks if we start it.

How many people are on the Mail3 team? What is their background?

Mail3 team size is relatively large as a Web3 startup.

There are more than 15 full time members, plus several part time members.

Most of the team members are engineers, we have 2 product managers, and 3 marketing managers.

How about the Mail3 tokenomics?

Mail3 tokens will be used to incentive decentralized service providers.

In our end vision, Mail3 services - including SMTP proxy server, data availability server, and front end server will all be decentralized. Tokens are used to incentive and coordinate them, to maintain the basic service for free, and to provide paid services for certain groups.

We must address that the tokenomics is a primitive, and may change in the future. Please focus more on the development of Mail3 product features now, we won’t issue token in the near future.

Is there a plan for people without .eth/.bit to use Mail3?

Definitely.

We limit eligible users with domain name because Mail3 is on the beta test stage now.

Mail3 will be more faster, reliable, and robust after this stage, we will remove the restriction.

What will happen after the .eth/.bit ownership changed?

This is a GOOD one!

Your mail will always be delivered to a mail box binding to your blockchain address, no matter which .eth/.bit it’s resolved from.

So if the domain name ownership changed, new mail to .eth/.bit will be sent to the new user, and your previous mails remain the same.
