Future of L2s on Ethereum

Twitter user @stonecoldpat0, who works for Arbitrum, tweeted this picture which shows the current and the future of Ethereum with its various layer 2s.

The picture is an excellent representation of the ethos of the community in which rollups will scale, and transactions by end users will happen on rollups, not Ethereum.

We can already see the shift. According to l2beats, layer 2 transactions have already surpassed mainnet Ethereum transactions.

For those interested in a history lesson, here is a link to the 2020 article “A Rollup-centric Ethereum Roadmap.”

Path to Decentralizing Optimism

Optimism tweeted some details from a meeting they had to discuss the decentralization aspects of their stack.

The details were released as a blog titled “Optimism’s Path to Technical Decentralization.”

Layer 2s have received a lot of criticism for not being decentralized enough. The details shared in the blog indicate that Optimism takes this criticism seriously and has a roadmap to address the concerns.

In a nutshell, the blog outlines the idea behind this approach:

While full provability will take time, there are several protocol upgrades that can be developed in parallel to move the OP Stack meaningfully further along the decentralization spectrum without waiting for fault proof readiness.

Optimism calls these upgrades “precursors for fault-proof decentralization”, which will be the focus areas in the future.

AltLayer Introduces Multi Sequencer Testnet Rollup

AltLayer introduces the first-ever multi-sequencer rollup, which promises to reduce censorship, improve security, and increase rollup availability.

The rollup-as-a-service company, AltLayer talked about the importance of decentralizing sequencers used in all rollups.

The new multi-sequencer testnet is one of the earliest implementations of a decentralized sequencer rollup that addresses these concerns.

The rollout is planned as a series of phases, with the first phase focused on decentralized sequencers.

Immutable Passport Launched to Select Studios

ImmutableX, the Ethereum scaling system for games and NFTs, announced the rollout of its self-custodial wallet Immutable Passport to a select group of studios.

The new tool is a non-custodial wallet, gamer profile, and authentication solution that does not require a password at sign-on, comparable to an Xbox Gamertag or an Apple ID.

In a press release marking the product launch in January, the company said:

Customer research conducted by the ImmutableX team found that ease of onboarding, security, compliance and plug and play features were the top priorities for development studios integrating Web3 components into their game.

And with Passport, the company has taken its first step towards onboarding a billion gamers.

Aave is Now Available on Scroll Testnet

Zero-knowledge scaling solution Scroll announced that leading lending protocol Aave is now live on its alpha testnet.

Big wigs like Aave will bring much-needed liquidity and activity into the Scroll network.

Till next time, have a great weekend!
