What to expect from Mercedes-Benz NXT

Welcome to Mercedes-Benz NXT. We are 0xNXT, the creative studio for Mercedes-Benz’s blockchain-based digital art and collectibles, and we’d like to share our perspective on collectibility, a framework for better predictability for collectors, and what to expect in the future.

Enabled by the emergence of blockchain technologies, we believe digital art and collectibles will play an increasingly significant role in people’s online experience. Mercedes-Benz NXT marks a commitment to building a dedicated presence within the Web3 community.

Mercedes-Benz’s history spans more than 130 years. During this time, collectors have engaged with and enjoyed all kinds of physical objects, from the vehicles themselves to model cars and memorabilia. Mercedes-Benz NXT aims to bring this collectibility to the digital realm.

A global, diverse organization like Mercedes-Benz will naturally bring forth many different ideas when it comes to digital objects as well. However, we know collectors value predictability – a way to anticipate future developments. This is why we set out early to develop a framework that guides all activities. Our ecosystem (see chart) illustrates the relationships between collections. It consists of three distinct categories: core collections, satellite projects, and peripheral projects.

This chart shows the relationship between categories and acitivites.
This chart shows the relationship between categories and acitivites.

Core collections

Core collections are planned, developed, and managed by 0xNXT and launched directly under the Mercedes-Benz brand. These digital objects are part of a coherent story: interrelated projects that continue to build on each other. The first is coming very soon.

Satellite projects

Satellite projects are standalone activities with a smaller scope and are often contrived in partnership with others. These one-time, unique ideas can express creativity more flexibly without having to worry about the consistency of the core collections.

Satellite projects focus on fun and experimentation unhindered by long-term plans. An example is “What is Nature?”, a completed project by the artist Seunghyo Jang, commissioned by Mercedes-Benz Korea, but before Mercedes-Benz NXT and not connected to it.

Peripheral projects

Peripheral projects are third-party projects that make use of Mercedes-Benz trademarks, whether officially licensed or through fair use. These digital objects are created and distributed independently from Mercedes-Benz, but may sometimes be supported through communication.

One peripheral project was NF-G, realized by ART2PEOPLE, for which the Mercedes-Benz G-Class was an inspiration. It used vehicle attributes under fair use and Mercedes-Benz covered this on its own channels. It is not connected to the activities of Mercedes-Benz NXT.

Another example of a peripheral project: The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula ONE Team has released blockchain-based digital objects in the past, which are not connected to the activities of Mercedes-Benz NXT.

This framework, its categories, and the visuals associated with each of them will be a recurring element in all future communication. Find out more on our website: http://nxt.mercedes-benz.com/ecosystem
