This rebrand heralds a new era that transcends geographical borders and establishes a decentralized digital nation built on Ethereum.
As we introduce NONnation, our primary goal is to create an inclusive, accessible platform that speaks to a diverse audience, while breaking down the barriers of technical jargon. We believe that NONnation aptly captures the essence of the project, emphasizing its ability to function as a digital nation with entities, assets, and a marketplace that mirror the infrastructure of a physical nation. Users can seamlessly buy, sell, and trade assets, while benefiting from innovative tools that streamline asset management.
Nations vs NONnation
The idea of a NONnation is a novel concept in which a decentralized community of people can come together to form a self-governing entity that exists entirely in the digital realm. Unlike traditional nations, which are defined by physical borders and a centralized government, the NONnation exists independently of these characteristics.
By operating in a digital space and relying on blockchain technology, the NONnation offers a new way of organizing communities that promotes decentralization, inclusivity, and transparency. Rather than being tied to physical territories and the structures of traditional governance, the NONnation offers a more flexible and adaptable model of self-governance that can evolve with the needs and desires of its members.
One of the unique aspects of the NONnation is that entities within it can choose which laws they want to follow by cloning rules from smart contract factories. This allows members of the NONnation to customize the rules and regulations that govern their interactions with each other, based on their own values and priorities.
Overall, the NONnation represents a unique approach to community organization and governance that has the potential to challenge traditional notions of nationhood and provide an alternative model for those seeking more decentralized and inclusive forms of self-governance. Rebrand Details
First, many names will change. Some require a bit of explanation, but the ones that are fairly straightforward are as follows:
EthereansOS → NONnation
EthereansLabs → NONlabs
$OS → $SOON
$NON Distribution
All of these reflect almost purely on the name change. The token ticker and on-chain token are changed to NONbeta $SOON for the current token and the change to $NON will occur with a swap for a new token which will run on the updated Asset contract. While a metadata update could change the name and information now, we strongly believe the updated contract will be better in the long run for our token. For the ones that require some explanation:
Guilds & Delegations → Entities
We are combining Guilds and Delegations into Entities. We feel this is as broad a term as possible to represent any kind of group, whether it be a business, DAO, city, etc. as to not stifle creativity of who may want to gather under this collective framework. The tools created can be used for groups of all sizes, for any purpose, with any kind of governance structure that can be dreamt up.
Items → Assets
Following suit, Items are becoming Assets. Again, this is a very broad term given to the token standard to allow the most freedom in thinking what can be made as a token. The standard was designed to unify ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 tokens into one superstandard with additional functionality and, since its inception, the range of utility and types of value tokenized has expanded. We want to stay ahead of what can be traded, held, and tokenized on Ethereum and believe that Assets best captures the endless potential of tokens and what they represent going forward.
Covenants → DeFi Tools
This is maybe the branding choice that raised the most discussion among the team. We spent a long time looking for the right word to encompass the secure, on-chain, automated defi tools that had been created and, while a covenant was the best single word fit we found, we decided to go for what would be most easily understood by people looking at the protocol for the first time: Defi Tools.
Factory Contracts → Rules
A key aspect of NONnation's decentralized framework is the integration of smart contracts that govern the platform akin to a legal system. These contracts, however, possess an advantage over traditional laws: they are unbreakable, ensuring fairness and trust across the digital landscape. While they will be operated by on-chain cloning from factory contracts, we again want this to be accessible to people that are looking to onboard to Ethereum without technical backgrounds.
While the analogy of building an operating system on Ethereum (’the world computer’) made a lot of sense to us nerds, we found it difficult to continuously explain the analogy to the average person. We felt that the nation analogy better captured the ability to coordinate, run governance, manage assets, and transact business while also being more readily understood by a majority of the population.
The NON prefix was born in response to our first round of ideas to the broad rebranding, when the negative connotations around nations and their centralized power structures did not sit will with members of the team even if the nation concept would be easier to grasp. We are not like a nation, we are a non-nation, a structure that flips the script on the centralized authority and power that traditional nations are built on. With that, the NONnation branding was formed and agreed upon by the team.
With this rebrand, we aim to emphasize NONnation's unique attributes, making it easier for both technical and non-technical individuals to understand and appreciate the potential of our blockchain-based digital nation.
