Nyetoon, a web(3)comic by Nye

Start Here. What is Nyetoon?

Welcome. This is a collectible archive of my web comic, Nyetoon.

Nyetoon is a web-comic that I sporadically worked on from 2012 to 2022(-ish.) I don't really draw it much anymore (despite a regular plead from my wife and and handful of devoted fans who occasionally harass me.)

I’m minting this archive for others to read. More on that in a second.

I wish I could say that the comic has a through line other than me. These are more exploratory personal initiatives - kind of “slow motion” improv. I only drew them when I had something I was thinking enough about to frame in the medium.

The truth is that Nyetoon was never really about being read, which is weird. Nyetoon was a way for me to keep from going insane. Sort of a diary I guess - “a close the door and leave me alone excuse” probably.

I began with little guys with ties with a lot of stupid jokes, and wound up talking about myself and my family. My marriage is in here. My kids. My fears, my depressions, my imaginary friends.

For some reason, a bear? Undoubtedly, the most popular character.

After migrating these comics three times in web2 - I’ve dug out the complete archive, with a hope that this site will be the permanent resting place for them in web3.

“Nyetoon” is now “0xC95Af125058aE235500471BF79F6E767df786859”

After an extraordinary amount of thinking, I’ve decided to mint this work on the EVM. (the Ethereum Virtual Machine)

If you have read my essay writing, you will understand that I have deep concerns about our personal creative data in the age of AI.

By putting the most important and personal work of my career on the blockchain, I hope to demonstrate an activity, that I hope many of the next generation of artists will see, and consider.

As such, Nyetoon is now an address on the blockchain**.** Every post will be collectible, and (if I can figure it out) will be tied into the larger intellectual property of the comic -- all on chain. I think? - still working on it.

The space is moving fast, and I am doing my best to evolve. AI and Web3 networks are difficult to keep up with, but for my personal work, and for the personal work of artists everywhere, I feel compelled to validate and attest it.

Additionally, Nyetoon is on-chain going forward because I wanted a record of “cartoon me,” before the robots get here. Conversely, I am also interested in what is next, and I am increasingly certain, tokenization is part of it. The comic, as a creative entity, could give me opportunity to explore the new emergent models of creation. Whatever it is!?!

IRL my name is Nye Warburton. You can find my resume for nyewarburton.eth here. You can also find my written work at https://mirror.xyz/nyewarburton.eth

Everything in Nyetoon, to this point, was written by a human.

All of the comics were made with a wacom tablet and old fashioned graphics software. Sometimes on laptops, other times on desktops. I’d say the art is mostly Photoshop, but occasionally others.

“I moved my hand around and still drew digitally” is what I am saying. I didn’t prompt anything, or run something through a latent space. The final output was usually published on my wordpress blog, until it crashed. The work, thankfully, was saved locally.

To create the ideas - I wrote on … paper, with a set of black ink pens that I carried around in a stack (with a rubber band around it.) Like a cartoonist does. Or at least, how cartoonists used to.

This site is served by the onchain front end Mirror.xyz. I hope to mint and participate in the work currently on the Optimism L2 blockchain community, to promote open source and collective action for good.

We will need to use AI responsibly as creatives.

Join the Network?

If you wish to support the work, you can do so by buying a comic entry. That value, comes to the Nyetoon address, and I use it as a motivation to set aside time to do more writing of them. That’s the economics of the system, as of now.

I’ve set a price point that I hope will work - around 10 US dollars. I will also limit runs of each comic to 100. Owning a comic means your ID will be attached to the Nyetoon network. As I understand it, connecting your address to mine allows me to send you new collectible things via peer to peer. A new publishing model perhaps?

Should there actually be a demand, the hope is that liquidity will produce more. I really don’t know quite what that will be or how this will go. I hope it’s fun for all of us and we learn something cool.

Thanks for your support.
