Water & Music: Mapping the fan journey in music and Web3

Water & Music, a research and intelligence network for the new music business, recently launched their report mapping the fan journey in the on-chain music ecosystem; from project discovery to post-mint.

The music industry is rapidly evolving with the emergence of Web3 technologies, and it's an exciting time for music fans. From the way we discover and consume music to how we interact with artists and the wider music community, Web3 is set to revolutionize the entire music experience. With the rise of mNFTs, fans can now own a piece of music history and engage with their favorite artists in novel ways. The possibilities for fan engagement are endless, from virtual concerts to exclusive meet-and-greets, all powered by cryptomedia.

The adoption of Web3 technology is still in its early stages, and there's a need for better education and awareness around its benefits. However, with the passion and dedication of the music community, we can work towards a more equitable and innovative music landscape.

Creator Grant Playlist

Last month, Reveel and Decent XYZ launched an NFT collaboration competition to celebrate the rollout of their Beta V2 application, generating over $20,000 for artists and bringing together hundreds of creators and collectors. The competition saw 57 collaborative NFT projects minted, with 373 unique collectors involved in supporting the various projects.

The competition also helped artists be discovered, with collectors discovering and minting new artists through the vote.r3vl.xyz page and Oohlala playlist. The Reveel Creator Grant competition reached large sectors within the music NFT space, generating impressive social reach and affirming the belief that collaboration powers the Web3 creator economy.

The team plans to continue offering similar competitions and promoting the power of collaboration and revenue sharing on-chain.

Industry:

Anotherblock: Royalty Backed NFTs

Levy.eth, founder of the Mint Podcast, recently brought in the co-founders of Anotherblock, to discuss how Royalty Backed NFTs can challenge the status quo of the Music Industry. The conversation focuses on creating frameworks for understanding how these NFTs can fit into existing music licensing frameworks. Morkeeth and Michel argue that an artist doesn't need to understand much about Web 3 to get started, and that by using an open marketplace for music-rights, an independent artist could sell a smaller percentage of their rights to their fans, who would support and spread their music. This would replace the need for major labels who provide upfront cash for artists in exchange for a larger percentage of their rights.

Coinbase receives Wells Notice from SEC

The SEC has issued a Wells notice to Coinbase, recommending that the SEC take enforcement action for possible violations of securities laws regarding an unspecified portion of their listed digital assets, staking service, Coinbase Earn, Coinbase Prime, and Coinbase Wallet. This is surprising because the SEC approved Coinbase's business and its listing process two years ago. The Paradigm Policy team agrees that there is no truly viable path to registration for crypto projects, despite the SEC's claims. Coinbase and other crypto companies seem ready to fight the battle in court. In other news, Binance and its founder Changpeng "CZ" Zhao are being sued by CFTC over US regulatory violations.

Technology:

Creativity in Multiplayer Mode

Nichanan of 1kx Network recently published a framework for multiplayer creation, that highlights projects acclerating this trend and categories ways in which this infrastructure is emerging.

Tl;dr:

The emergence of web3 has allowed for more participation in creative works, making the creator process increasingly multiplayer. This article provides a framework for the creative process and gives examples of how web3 projects are enabling co-creation at each stage of the process. The five stages are Formation, Coordination, Production, Value Distribution, and Post-Release evolution of creative work. By involving a larger group in the creative process, creators can define a set of values, source ideas from within the community, and produce art that doesn’t compromise third-party interests, while communities can discover and onboard individuals that share their purpose, produce creative works that stay true to their values, and sustain itself without subverting to the success metrics of third parties.
