#. Governance Preamble

The “#. Governance -” set of papers describe the foundation for a new approach to governance. One that is designed with Orchestra DAO in mind, but that can be used by any other DAO or group. Since the task at hand is significant, and since we expect you to scrutinize our work, as you have done so very diligently in the past, we will do our best to be thorough and meticulous in securing our foundations. That means that we will start by laying out our assumptions, and only after delineate the specifics of Governance for DAOs. However, since we know that we humans are an impatient bunch, we will start with the bottom line here.

We will propose a “liquid” form of governance for DAOs (DLG). It will provide a flexible framework for group decision making. Put simply, we suggest that different types of decisions call for different types of governance. We contend that it is possible to optimize governance by pulling the specific mechanisms that best suit the context of any given decision, from a range of governance systems. To do this we need a good map of the different types of decisions, as well as a good understanding of the mechanisms that govern human behavior. We think we have both.

Last thing, such an approach, one that is both intensional and extensional, i.e., it points at specific mechanisms and governance processes and at the same time it provides the guidelines and principles for future evolution and adaptations, is very well suited to automation.
