A Retro Memoir from Steam Gamers Back in 2003

During the past week, P12 reached multiple milestones in the Genesis Airdrop Event. But without the support of our beloved gamers and developers, we would never have come this far.

We reached out to some gamers ranked within the top 50, hoping to do a short interview about their gaming history. We are lucky and honored to have some kind response from our interviewees. We are here to share it:

Intro

Today's content came from 3 Chinese steam gamers, all ranked in the top 50 among all 500k users verified on the P12 platform. China is a large gamer community with over 30 million steam users and 380+ local games published.

The Origins

We started the interview by asking "How did you got into steam, what was the first game you played on steam?".

Surprisingly, we received 3 similar answers from the interviewees. "It was because of Counter-Strike 1.6".

"I started playing back in CS 1.3, I did not even know Steam was a gaming platform back then. All I knew was if I wanted to play CS 1.6, I would have to download and register on Steam."

Other interviewees shared the same information. Their initial contact with Steam was because of Counter-Strike: 1.6. They all remained loyal players of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive ever since it came online in August 2012.

The Favourite

As we all know, most gamers are wide open to trying any type of game, especially in the early stage of their gaming history. Our interviewees were no different, they were the early pioneers of many timeless classics:

"I tried many other games as well, like Dota and Dota 2, I played them for many years. But ever since my gamer friends got busy dealing with life and marriage, we stopped spending too much time on those games. In my current stage of life, 10 minutes death match in CS:GO is probably the only thing that works for me, I get to enjoy, without devoting too much time."

"My favorite game type is FPS game, but I also play a lot of MMORPG and ARPG. I would say Worldofwarcraft is my second favorite game, I devoted a lot of time to it."

From web2 to web3

Many gamers heard about gamefi and web3, more or less. Same with our interviewees, all three of them knew gamefi to some degree, and some even hold a crypto investment portfolio.

"So how much do they know about web3 and gamefi, representing first-gen gamers, do they have any advice for P12?"

“I actually do know about blockchain, matter of fact: my crypto portfolio is in a net loss right now… I really hope web3 and gamefi can focus on the nature of play rather than earning. Blockchain technology should only be implemented when we have matured and quality game in place. Fun-to-play is really a must, players have to be willing to spend, before they all think about how to earn. Otherwise, a death spiral is inevitable.”

From: GT_Marksman

“I had heard about ‘Play-2-Earn’ before, and I did try some. However, it was a really bad experience for me as a web2 gamer... For me, web3 or p2e games are not fun at all, including but not limited to the visual effects/network stability/interactive play. I don't really think true gamers will play these games, at least not for now.”

It is obvious that web3 games need some major make-over in order to get web2 audience.

The expectation

P12 values users' feedback. We definitely love taking suggestions and expectations as well.

The conversation, therefore, goes to the next topic: "What types of games you'd like to see on the P12 platform in the future?"

My personal preference would be FPS games with MMO traits. Like ‘The Division’ or ‘Destiny 2’, where gamers can participate in the design of DLC and spend time treasure hunting. In my opinion, this will better attract ‘p2e‘ players in the web2 space.

Wrapping-up

Our interviewees today represent the first generation of Steam gamers back in 2003, who should already be in a later stage of life where work, family, and obligation kick in.

Loss of time, busy at work and family. Gamers in that era may not enjoy gaming like they used to, but the spirits live on, and they will still love gaming just like on day 1.

To all our gamers out there, when was the last time you were "Online"?
